is it possible thta because everyone is intimidated by the big 3 ivies that less people apply, could that maybe account for lower admissions rates... i for one believe many qualified people don't apply because they think they won't get in... any supporters of my theory?

???? nobody agrees with me????

that would give them higher admission rates. the reason their rates are low is because they select very few from a large pool of applicants. but good theory.

If less people apply, the admissions rate would be higher.
I don't think the intimidation factor wards off that many qualified people. For one thing, an applicant just may not like all of those schools (just because they're highly ranked does not mean they're for everyone, and in fact, they are very different from each other also). Also, I think there are a lot of people who apply just for the heck of it, who may not even want to go or may not be qualified. So I think the number of applicants is actually quite high.

Anyway, the point is, I, for example, am not applying to Harvard because I didn't like it, not because I'm intimidated (I'm applying to Princeton and Yale). So I think the number of qualified people who don't apply because of intimidation is quite small.

everyone applies to these schools. A lot of people apply just for the kicks. Common app for all 3 schools, why not?

good point... but in general... not just for kicks... the number of qualified applicants is still generally small... right?

common apps suck. you for ivies, youve got two more forms to fill, excluding any financial aid. common took me only a solid 20 minutes, it was the supplementary forms that ****ed me off and robbed my time

I hate the common app actually.
And cujoe, I don't think in general the number of not just for kicks applicants is small. If that were so, why would it be so hard for qualified people to get in?

That theory makes no sense. Not only would the need for a high yield rate force them to accept more applicants (as is the case at U of Chicago), but I would think that MORE people apply at HYP because they are HYP.

I'd try next 10 or 20 schools. More diversity, Still extremely competitive, You could find more of a culture shock when you discover that HYP have students that have gone to prep schools or schools that cater to HYP.

You’d be surprised to know how many people secretly apply to HYP.

^ I second this.

Which is why, people in CC have great chances.
Jersey13 once told me, there are around 6000 2300+ scorers on the SAT.
Now out of 8 Ivies, you are bound to get in to at least one of the schools (that is, if you have CC stats+ awesome essays, recs).

So fear not, we will make it!

28,000 applied for under 2,000 seats at harvard last year. The theory doesn’t work.
