Hypothetical Scenario

Say there are three girls...same school and location...all going for the same college. Who would impress college admissions more?

Person A:
4.0 GPA with the toughest courses possible
rank 1 or 2
2200+ SAT score
great recommendations
very few, if not any, ECs, jobs, community service, etc.

Person B (Asian):
3.7-3.8 GPA with toughest courses
rank top 5%
2000+ SAT score
great recommendations
a few clubs and a leadership position or two, lots of community service, perhaps even an internship.

Person C:
3.9-4.0 GPA also with the toughest course load
rank top 5%
2000+ SAT score
great recs...
all-star track/xc athlete, a job...and couple other things here and there, but nothing major other than that.

Now based on that, who do you think would would stand out more?

Well it would depend on what college. But with these stats, I would say person C would have the best shot. She is in the top 5% and has a chance of being recruited for sports. Great athletics + great academics always give a person an advantage in admissions.

It depends on the definition of all-star, really. But if it means at the very least state-level, then I would agree that Person C has the best shot.

^^ agreed. If the 'all-star' bit doesn't mean a whole lot, then I'd say Person B is most qualified (though being Asian would probably hurt, depending on the university).

i agree, person c seems to be very well-rounded.

person C, probably. Person A doesn't have anything special, person B has a lower GPA/average ECs, person C has a higher GPA AND has better ECs.

I agree with all of the people above... person C.

i agree too. i'm excited to see if this is one of those threads with a moralistic end!

I'd rather go to a second-tier university on merit rather than get in on the atheletic quota. It would forever malign my intellectualism.
