AP Scores:
Chem 5
World History 4
Bio 5
Physics B 5
English Language 5
Calculus AB 5
17 UC-transferable courses (I didn't say UC in the list even though I'm applying because I know I'll get into UCSD, maybe UCLA and Cal)
Letters of Rec pretty good: they've known me for all of high school because of clubs and stuff: 1 science, 1 english
English isn't my first language
Ultra-low-income (qualify for AP fee waivers with plenty to spare)
Essays prosaic with witty bits- about commitment to future profession
ECs:
lots and lots. Most significant: 7 years of Bb clarinet and piano, 2 years of Eb alto clarinet, 6 years Science Olympiad (always got ribbons, a couple medals). Also Botball president (3rd place national website competition, 4th place regional competition), Friends of the Library (volunteer group) president 3 years, Science Fair (won award from local dental society and 1,2nd places over two years), ACSL member (no placement data), NFL certificate received, NHS, Peer Tutoring Center member, then founding treasurer at the restart (it was cancelled due to funding problems, then restarted a year later). Also Band Librarian, voted Most Dedicated Musician and Outstanding Musician, varsity band, pep band section leader, 1st chair 3 years, volunteer in hospital and museum and library, AP Scholar with Distinction, QuestBridge finalist and QuestLeadership semifinalist, CSF probably lifetime member and NHS junior and senior year.
This year's classes:
Band [top class]<- (I know I should have taken AP Music Theory, but oh well)
AP Environmental Science <-I ran out of science classes to take
AP Physics C
AP English Literature
AP Statistics <-lazy and didn't take AP Calc BC or Calc CD
AP Psychology

One major problem: C in calculus . I retook it, but my school only replaces one semester even though the class covers all of the year's material.

So basically my hooks are ultra-low-income, dedication to Band and Medicine, and demonstrated leadership.

...so basically I can just plan for UCSD, right?

Thanks, ramsfan. Anyone else?
My teachers thought they were funny. Me, I think they're rather prosaic. It's kind of like Andy Rooney (the old guy on CBS's 60 minutes)'s style.

only way of knowing you're qualified for HYPS, JHU, and MIT is by applying
and your stats show that you're definitely going to be competitive

just make sure you fall in love with your safety (UCSD), because if things dont work out, since all these schools are crapshoots, then you can fall back on something you really life. no biggie, because UCSD is a really nice school and easy to have fun at

Apply everywhere. You have incredible scores, except for the math on the SAT II. That C in Calculus will definitely hurt you, but it depends on how each school interprets it. You did get a 5 on the AP test, so this either tells the college that you were bored and needed more of a challenge, or you were lazy. There will be colleges out there that will interpret it differently so apply everywhere so you get those acceptances. I know your low income, so you should at least get the CB application waivers (4 of them) and you can als request waivers from schools. Good luck.

I feel yah, I got a C in calculus my sophomore year b/c I wasn't really mature enough for the class... I got a 5 though :

I think that despite the C you have a great chance at any of them.. I have a friend who had a much lower GPA than you and worse test scores who went to MIT last year... anything can happen.

Thanks for input. Anyone else have more?
Yargg, my school also has Calc D/Linear Algebra and Mathematica, but I couldn't have gotten into those, so I left them out.

Thank you people...
namkim, do you read the MITblogs? They're fun...
It doesn't replace on my transcript.
Actually, need-blind helps, because they don't care if I can pay my bills, which is awesome. They look at low-income as a good thing, though. Thanks for all of your help.
Anyone else?
