i'm an asian junior interested in applying to duke. what are my chances?

major: environmental engineering

rank: 2/630 in a pretty competitive high school in alabama. last year, one person got into upenn, one into duke, one got admission to princeton but went to oxford, one into mit. there are probably one or two more who got into a good college.

SAT: 780 math, 720 CR 630 writing. i will take it again to improve my critical reading and writing sections.
PSAT: 226- so i'll probably be a national merit semifinalist.

AP classes:

Chem: A+
USH: A
Environ: A+
Bio: A+
Macro: A
English Lang/Comp: A+
Calculus BC: A+

Next year:

English Lit
Calculus C at local college (will count as AP)

EC's

JV Tennis:9th, received junior patriot award for good attitude
Varsity Tennis: 10,11, probably 12, lettered in 11th grade
Youth group treasurer, will probably be officer 12th grade too.
Mu alpha theta
Science honor society

thats all i can think of right now. my grades are good but my ec's are weak. i'm thinking about starting a table tennis club in school, since i really enjoy ping pong. so what do you think? i bet you were fooled by the title.

I am sure that people aren’t responding to this thread because of the title…Salutorian status really helps with duke, bring the writing score up(even though duke doesn’t look at the writing score it doesn’t hurt to have 700+ on all sections), and start the ping pong club at school, write good essays and you will have a great chance…

I think that Colleges00701 meant the writing section of the SAT, not the essay section. The writing section is what makes the entire exam scored out of 2400 rather than just 1600, and the essay section is just that score that you get out of 12 that doesn’t count toward your composite score.

actually the essay does affect the score of the writing section. its like 30% of the writing section grade. on the score report, it shows your essay score, multiple choice score, and the composite writing score.

@ OP: Why are you worried? Your stats will put you in the contention just like everyone else. Chill out. At this point, it is up to you to do a good job on your essays/application to convince them to admit you.

It is very hard getting into Duke… not to scare you, but valedictorians and people with perfect SAT scores sometimes get rejected. Besides putting in your best effort in your application/essays and continuing your involvement in extracurriculars, there is nothing else you can do to improve your profile at this point.

If you are truly interested in starting a table tennis club and are willing to put in the work in maintaining it, then go for it. You got to make it clear on your application that it wasn’t started to pad your resume because admissions officers might think so.

By the way, you should feel ashamed for deliberately misleading people with your title. It is not funny, and many people consider me to have a good sense of humor. You are desperate, but so are countless others on CC.

nothing wrong with slik nik’s post. This thread is pretty offensive. Most people who are annoyed with chance threads at least tolerate them and even grudgingly oblige the poster. But this thread just descends into pure deceit which is guaranteed to **** some people off.

I don’t know if Duke weighs the SAT writing section the same as the Critical Reading and Math Sections(I know Duke looks at the writing score, but I think the C.R. and Math Score is given more weight, its best to call them and ask)…@rk33, all schools require the SAT + writing, and the ACT + writing but I doubt they place much emphasis on the writing part of the test…@QUIX, slik nik’s post wasn’t offensive in imo, at least he chanced the guy…

in “the best 368 colleges,” it doesnt show the freshman median writing section scores. so if they do look at it, they probably dont put much emphasis on it. but i better raise it just to be safe.

The writing score alone will probably disqualify you. You’re not a URM, so you aren’t given any leeway-- being an Asian actually hurts you when you’re applying.

Ok lets assume that writing isn’t considered as much as CR and Math. Having a bad writing score wouldn’t make you application any better, even if they don’t consider writing as much as CR and Math

@colleges00701… well all colleges obviously require the SAT + writing, it’s kinda hard to take it without haha. But not all colleges require the ACT with writing, e.g. UChicago.

Either way I think the writing is the least important section. I’d say the essay can make up for a low writing score.
