I am a repeat freshman at the Lawrenceville School. I know that when i applied and was accepted here I had so many questions about life at boarding school and what to expect. So if anyone out there has any questions about Lville or just boarding school in general let me know. feel free to ask. Obviously I am a boarder. Im about 3 hours from home and I love it here

What are the pros and cons of entering repeating a year?

@NomenclatureH: Have a look here:

are all the repeat freshmen repeating for athletic purposes?

From what I remember, Lvillehockey applied for sophomore year, but was accepted into freshman year.

I’d also love to know the answer to NomenclatureH’s question.

Hi so I am applying to boarding schools on the East Coast like Lawrenceville, Hotchkiss, Deerfield, Suffield, and Andover.I am a sophmore and I am so desperate to know what going to boarding school is like. Is it fun? I really want a good education but I am also a very social person. I like to have a good time and when I am I thrive. Are people typically the same as they are in public schools? Do boarding schools have parties? Can you sneak out? Can you hookup with guys? For example, one thing I heard is that people sneak out to go to Princeton parties at Lawrenceville (now that would be awesome). Im just so paranoid that its gonna feel like an over controlling jail haha sorry about the overload on questions. I just want an explanation that isnt all perfect (like in the booklets and presentations etc.). Thank you so much! I owe you xoxo

Can you please tell me your stats from when you were applying? What do you think was the main factor that helped you to be accepted? Thankss

You have to get 104th percentile on the SSATs, play 10 varsity sports and master 10 different instruments to get admitted.

Hey everyone, sorry if I take a few days to answer. Its hard to keep up during the school days but it’s no problem. @nomenclatureH, being a repeat really isn’t that huge of a deal. The pros are the material isnt as challenging, and it’s great for athletics. Cons being that everyone is younger than me by at least a year, and obviously having 5 years of high school. But in many ways that’s a not a con at all. @blairsmith don’t worry, I had just as many questions before I came. Yes it is a lot of fun! I’m having a blast here, it’s doesn’t even feel like school. I know what you mean, I want to get into a great college and learn but at the same time I want to hang with friends. The kids are different compared to public school, but not in a bad way! They all want to learn and are all good kids…for the most part haha. Sneaking out…yes and no. Nobody has really snuck out of their house per se, but going to another kids room after lights out isn’t uncommon. But I’m sure it will happen as the year goes on. hooking up…yes you can hookup with a guy. It’s high school, it’s going to happen. your not monitored 24/7. Yeah the parties in Princeton are nuts but nobody has really gone to them yet. Lville has crazy dances though. we have like really good DJs brought in. I mean like world renowned DJs. And all the school goes, so like 750 kids. It’s crazy. Any more questions feel free to ask!

@exeterlover I had solid grades, but a poor ssat for sure. So @mbvloveless is not correct. I had all A’s my freshman year at my local high school. I had a 37% on my ssat. Yes, a 37. I came for athletics so I probably wouldn’t have gotten accepted if I wasnt recruited. And I play no instruments.

What would you say are the main strong points of Lawrenceville? Like what is the school good at, what subjects do they teach well, what makes it unique compared to other schools?

Our uniqueness lies in the Harkness, our House system, and (for me personally) the Bunn library’s music collection, which has a lot of obscure CDs that I like.

Academically, if you are in Precalc BC and above for Math, then it’s pretty good. However, the real deal is the humanities. I thought I would hate history, having never taken a single history course prior to Lawrenceville, but all of our meetings so far have been engaging and intellectually stimulating. The English classes are very good too. The only thing that irritates me is that, sometimes when you request to be in a higher level course, they do not always approve. I’m a soph and currently stuck with easy soph chemistry because they did not think I could handle the workload of AP Chem.

We also have very strong sport programs, but I don’t know much about athletics since I’m not an athlete. I’m sure Lvillehockey can expand on this though.

Yes, hookups do happen.

P.S The biggest con about repeating is an additional 55k bucks for high school, unless you’re on FA…

Well yeah depending in your financial situation, repeating is a big decision.

You must be an incredible hockey player. Did you play on an elite AAA traveling team?

I played a lot of hockey as a kid growing up in Massachusetts, we played or practiced everyday at the Bantam level and sometimes had 2 or 3 games on a Sunday.

@weatherby yes i played on a AAA select team.

Thanks for the reply,

I was taking Accelerated Geometry in 8th grade, and now I’m taking Triple A (Accelerated Algebra 2/Trig) for 9th grade, do you think this is a sufficient math level for Lawrenceville, or will it get their attention?

How’s the music/performing arts there? Especially band?

I would say, it doesn’t matter what math course you’re taking - just do well and get As. Many freshmen take Geometry and sophs Alg II, so there’s a place for everyone.

The music/performing arts are great, from what I’ve heard. I know we have a jazz band, but I’m new to Lawrenceville this year as well so I’ll try to get to this as soon as I know the details.

Note- i am a current senior at lawrenceville and seniors do go to parties at Princeton with their friends who have graduated and gone to pton. freshmen… not so much. and we don’t have “world-renowned dj’s” play at dances, though we do sometimes hire outside professional dj’s, in no way are they “world-renowned”. and not the entire school shows up to dances.
