Hey guys,

I am a junior at Olympic Heights Community High School and would like to know my chances of getting into UF.

I have a 3.87 GPA, ranked #10 out of 300. Also I will be taking the SAT this Saturday. Based off practice tests with my tutor I am averaging 1950+.

AP Courses:

Human Geo-5
Euro-4
World-4
Chem
Lang
Psych
APUSH

The last 4 APs are the ones I am taking currently and I have taken the max allowed in my school each year.

Please chance me as I really wanna get into UF!

Not really enough info to chance you, but so far you’re doing all of the right things.

UF uses Holistic admissions. 50% weight is given to GPA/Test/Class Rigor while the other 50% goes to EC’s/Leadership/Essay (in general). So while GPA and Test scores are important, you can’t ignore EC’s and the essay.

If your GPA is a 3.87 un-weighted and you’re taking the most rigorous course load available at your high school, you’re doing great. Shoot for a 1950 on your SAT, but know that your SAT score isn’t given as much weight as your GPA/Class Rigor (in other words, it’s ok if you don’t hit that score your first time, but re-take the test again in the fall). UF doesn’t look at your AP test scores (for admissions), but it does take the classes into account when determining rigor.

That leaves the other 50%! If you haven’t already, please start working on your EC’s. Even a part time job would help, as does volunteering. Then spend some time over the summer working on your essay. It doesn’t need to win a prize/award, but it does need to be solid.

Good Luck!!

Sorry about that I forgot to list my EC’s:

Model UN: 2 Years, currently serving as VP
NHS: 2 years
SNHS: Was created this year at our school.
Social Studies Academic Games: Created this year also
SECME: 2 years
Indian Religious Group: 3 years
Library volunteer: 4 years
Volunteering at various organizations.
Tennis team: 1 year

Our school lacks a lot of clubs and most of them I am in, and our school also lacks a lot of APs. Most of them I have taken but I am limited each year by my school.

A 1950 was once considered a good score for UF, but now it is average. UF has become extremely selective over the last couple of years. Aim for something 2000+. Everything else looks good, though. They prefer people form top 5%, and EC’s are good.

Quick question, I want to get into the aerospace engineering program at UF; does that make a difference in admissions? Also I plan to build a home made server using raspberry pi and would like to know if that stands out on an application.

For Freshman, UF does not take into account your major/college. It does with transfer students, as in that case you have to meet your college requirements.

Sure, include your hobbies and such, if you can find room in your application. Either in the essay, or in the “additional info” section of the application.

UF accepted 44% of applicants in 2012, so it is not THAT hard to get admitted. Also in 2012 the average SAT was 1890. If you score a 1950 then you probably will get accepted – BUT NEVER COUNT ON IT!

Apply to UF, but also apply to at least four other schools, preferably seven in total. This gives you a safety margin, plus gives you real choices. Also, I recommend that you apply to at least one college which you think you CANNOT get into. Those are called “reach” schools, and everybody should apply to one just to see if you can make it. How about the University of Miami?
