But karbin, a GPA only makes sense relative to the other factors, such as rigor of courses, rigor of school environment, and class rank. A number by itself means almost nothing (a concept not too many from my school comprehend).

The average GPA at Vanderbilt (My College), is a 3.4 or 3.5. My class rank in high school was 32/71. I did take a high number of AP classes

EDIT: I thought you were saying that my stats were meaningless unless I provided context

^just so you know, I was just pointing out a fact, not asking you for your stats.

karbin, i just creeped on your stats. you’re an urm? maybe?
and you have an amazing SAT. and you’ve taken a buttload of AP’s. and you are an amazing leader. I’m surprised you didn’t apply to even more top range schools- i’m sure you would’ve gotten in.

When I say I have other things, I don’t mean anything ridiculously over the top outstanding. I just know it’s one of the strongest resumes (minus the GPA) at my school.

I mean, if anyone wants to take a gander (though I won’t be offended or upset since I know these things are a pain), here’s my current stuff:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/711034-like-words-man-who-has-spent-little-too-much-time-alone.html

cept I forgot Princeton Book Award and volunteering at an Obama rally last year. Though those don’t really make that much of a difference.

no one is going to reject you flatout with a 3.75 GPA which is actually competitive in the columbia pool considering how tough your school is. look through the GPAs of people who have been accepted last year in the results threads. stop being unrealistic just for the reassurance that you crave from these forums.

you’re right. i ask for opinions just to flatter myself and don’t actually have any doubt based on the fact I have 5 B’s and most of them in my junior year. clearly, i am just trying to get attention.

like i said, it’s not about the GPA- it’s about messing up junior year. but thanks for the reassurance to the people who’ve messed up their freshman year or whatever and have a 3.75 because of that.

also, i see that you, too, had a 3.7 GPA out of 5 and were very worried in your time. I hope things worked out for you as well.

I would be worried about a downward trend in grades. However, I wouldn’t worry overly much about the grades that you have already gotten because there is little that you can do about them.

dude there’s a difference between worrying when you have a GPA of 3.75 out of 4.00 and when you have a 3.75 out of 5.00. when you express your worry about the former, it’s insulting to those (like myself) who have even lower GPAs.

in any case, i dont have to justify my 3.7 to you. i have an extremely sharp improving trend and i go to a school that’s tougher than >99% of high schools in america (i’m an international).

having said that, i apologize if it seemed like i was hurling abuse at you. on the contrary, i’m know that you seek reassurance from these forums (just like many many others here) but i’m telling you that the more time you spend here, the less reassurance you will find. after all, ivy admissions are more or less a crapshoot and whatever people might tell you, you (and i) both have a shot but statistically, aren’t going to get in.

I don’t mean for you to justify anything. You’ve done great things and I sincerely hope that you’re successful, despite the GPA.

As for my GPA, my 3.75/4.15 is at a rigorous school, but not as rigorous a school as yours. And there is a downward trend. I honestly want to hear from someone with a downward trend who has gotten in.

It’s easy to be worried when what you’ve done is the opposite of what colleges have explicitly stated that they want to see.

Honestly, Chasing, there really isn’t much you can do about your marks (except to do exceptionally well senior year). So stop worrying about the thing you can’t change.

Instead focus on bringing out your personal qualities in your application and hope for the best. Gook luck

i have gotten 1 extra B every year. my uw gpa is, quite frankly, significantly lower than 3.75. you can do it!

haha thanks. I hope good EC’s mean a lot.

well, every part of your app should add up to give a pleasing picture of the real you.

of course.
