As an avid marketer and researcher, I decided to compare popularity of various forums (including CC) based on their traffic. CC is more popular than I thought, according to Alexa rankings:

That is one of the many sites I found that promise to do it. I didn't take the time to find if it costs money. (I am pretty sure it does) One article said to take the time to make up a screen saver and upload it to one of the big free download sites (tucows, download.com, etc) with your website imbedded in it, and go from there. Noone seems to offer free help however.

Now, you know the following was inevitable and with a tool like Alexa it was just irresistable. The methodology is unquestionable since it depends solely on the college's internet site popularity. So even though it can be skewed by student use at huge colleges, it is undoubtedly as scientifically valid as USNews. Thus, it should become the preferred method of choosing a college by anal-minded high school students who base their choices on rankings. Moreover, since the numbers constantly change, the prestige-conscious applicant can have the pleasure of checking daily to see what moves have happened that could affect his choice of where to apply. So here it is, the top 30 colleges by their Alexa rating:

Among conferences, the Big Ten rules with 8 in the top 30. Duke (3829), Brown (7092), Dartmouth (12,864), Caltech (8312), Georgetown (6125), Johns Hopkins (3819), Northwestern (4577), Wash U. St. Louis (6381), Rice (9211), Emory (7341), Notre Dame (6897), Vanderbilt (7183), Tufts (6819), and Wake Forest (24,155) just can't cut the mustard despite their top 30 ranking in USNews. So those thinking of applying to any of those bottom feeders should tear up your applications immediately and go where real prestige awaits you in the Alexa Top 30.
