I am an NYU Stern Senior, Ask Me Anything!

How do people major like that, in finance and management. I am not getting it…

I have a question and a request. What can i do to stand out as an applicant to NYU Stern? Also please check out my profile and chance me btw if possible  Thank you!!

Junior
GPA : 3.5ish freshmen year then transferred to a better private school 3.0 Sophomore year and 3.5ish Junior year. 3.8ish(projected) senior year Unweighted
No honors no APs. Senior year will have two honors
My school is very screwed. Its private and the administration is trying to eliminate as many APs as possible. And its also really hard to get into APs not just A- in the previous year but also with recommendations from the teacher and have to take math exam.
Class Rank: NA
SAT II"s:
Math 2: 800(projected)
Physics: 800(projected)
Chemistry: 750(projected)
Extreme confident about the SAT 2 Scores

ACT
34
So my test scores are much better than grades.

Extracurriculars
Investing in market
Made from 100k to 300k
Worked at bank
Worked at stock firm
National Games of the People’s Republic of China 70 hrs
A 501©3 non profit in SoCal to help under privilege children in education
Qinghai charity project to help provide children with educational materials in a township for four years
Created a club called Investing Club

Summer before Senior:
Boy state California
Pepperdine University Youth Citizenship seminar
Babson Entrepreneurship program

For my recommendations, I have a really good relationship with my counselor. I also made some contribution to the school. My english teacher will write most likely about how i improved over the junior year in my efforts and grades. I will have a recommendation from the 501©3 program as well.

My college essays will also be superb like A+++.

CHance me Please

I heard that it is very hard to transfer into NYU stern, which major did you take before and where? Also… how did you get in???

Is it easier to transfer into Stern from another faculty in NYU or another university?

What is the average “normal” IB score of a NYU stern student? And are some majors easier to get in than others?

@broadwaybum NYU Stern makes it really easy to double major/concentration because the advanced electives that determine your major are generally 12 credits (unless you pursue economic theory/actuarial science) which means you typically only have to take 3-4 courses for a business major. As stern students have 44 elective credits, most students end up double majoring, some even double major and minoring.

@Portis405

Hey Portis,

I am a recruited athlete for swimming and I had a 3.6w gpa, 1950 SAT, 650 math level 2, 690 US history. My times for swimming are fast and you could say that the coach pretty interested in me. I know that applying to NYU stern will be a lot harder than applying to NYU but do you think I have a chance if the coach helps me through the admissions for stern?

At the moment, I haven’t told the coach yet that I might consider applying to NYU Stern instead of NYU. The coach probably assumes that I’m going to apply to NYU and not NYU stern right now. Should I tell him that Im interested in applying to stern? Will that make him less interested in me?

I don’t know what kind of pull there is for a recruited athlete, but I would say that if you could get your SAT up to 2000 it would be better since your gpa @3.6 appears to be weighted which puts you on the lower side for NYU in general.
