i am confused about early action..please clarify!!

what is the difference between early action and early decision??
how many schools can you apply to?? what's the deal with the financial aid prospects??
help!

Early Action – Apply early, get your decision early. You can apply to as many EA schools as you want, as long as you’re not applying too a school that has…

Single-Choice Early Action – Apply early, get your decision early, but you cannot also apply to another EA/SCEA school and especially not any schools with…

Early Decision – Apply early, get your decision early, but you are committed to that school if you get in and must withdraw all other apps. Under rare circumstances you can turn down an ED acceptance due to financial reasons.

Your financial aid offer will always come early for ED (for obvious reasons), but it depends on the school for (SC)EA.

ohh thanks
so you can apply to as many early action/early decision schools as you want???

but if you decide to apply to a school with single choice early action you can ONLY apply to that school right?

You can only apply to one ED school, and if you do, you can’t apply anywhere else EA, ED, or SCEA. It says so in the ED contract. (And obviously if you got into multiple ED schools, you’d be kinda screwed: one ED school would get suspicious when you don’t send the deposit, investigate, and then notify your other ED school and get you rescinded. Bad.)

ok so you can apply to as many early action schools as you want but only to one early decision??
and you can apply to that one early decision school along with the other early action ones right??

^oh wait… nvm

You can apply to as many EA schools as you want even if you apply ED to a school, as long as if you’re accepted to the ED school you decline any other acceptance, including any that come through EA.

Be careful, although this is GENERALLY true there are exceptions. For instance Brown:

[Brown Admission: Regular & Early Decision](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University)

“Early Decision is reserved for applicants who have not applied to any other Early Decision or Early Action programs (Ivy League or non-Ivy League institutions).”

So, ALWAYS check each college’s EA/ED policy, they are easy to find on the school’s admissions website.

Did not know that, good to know-- thanks!

I’m assuming state university rolling admissions doesn’t factor into their policy?

^ they don’t

This is helpful as we are just entering this process-- thanks!
