Hello, thank you for taking the time to read my post, and your feedback will be greatly appreciated.
I am a sophomore living in California currently, and I am having trouble researching majors.
Up until now, I was for sure going to go into Business, and get an MBA, but now I’ve been hearing that getting a BBA is not practical. It made sort of interested in Econ, because it’s also related to business and apparently better than getting a BBA. The reason why I am so confused is the job I want in the future is to be somewhere along the lines of management, marketing, and somewhat entrepreneurship. I am more into the management side than the financial/math side. I don’t want my job to be in finance/sales analyst relatated stuff because I am not that best at math and I don’t feel like I will enjoy it. I purely like business for the management side and entrepreneurial aspect.
The internet says Econ is better, but is it really for me? I feel like business would suit me, but I am going to be getting an MBA no matter what. I was thinking I could major in Econ(BA) and minor is business. Afterwards I would get a MBA in management and marketing. Would that be better? Can I get a job that I like with that major? Or should I just stick with a BBA?
Note- Another reason why Econ has interested me is because I think I can get into a good UC college, and only Berk has business, but SD and SB have econ, and I think I have a shot at those schools. I feel like other non uc schools will be tough for me because I have a horrible freshman GPA, and UC’s won’t even look at that.
Thank you so much for your help, your comments will be greatly appreciated.
Take time and look at the curriculum for business schools and for an economics major at some schools and see how they are different. In general economics is a liberal arts course of study. I’m not sure how many classes would be in a business minor but it would most likely be far less than if you were in a b-school. If you go the business school route you will major in a business discipline and you will take a business core with classes such as accounting, finance, IT, business law etc. Some fields (ex. accounting, finance) may make it easier to find a job compared to economics, but that is hard to predict. It really depends on what you want and, I guess, what school you can get into. You can apply to both types of programs at different schools and see where you get in.
Note also that top MBA programs want students who have had usually between 2-5 years of significant work experience so if you are aiming for one of these programs you will likely not go directly to grad school.
Econ probably won’t be up your alley then. Majors aren’t really “better” than one another, it’s more dependent upon your own strengths, skills, and interests and how it aligns to the field. Econ can be very theoretical and require strong mathematical skills once you reach your advanced electives.
If you are interested in management, marketing, and entrepreneurship why wouldn’t you pursue a major along those lines? Also as an FYI, no one ever jumps straight into a management role regardless of your major or industry. The only scenario where that plays out is if you start your own company, which is also an option if you have the foundational skills, idea, and desire.
Don’t worry about it too much. I doesn’t matter too much in the real world. Find a school you can afford, will qualify for and excel at once you arrive. Then find a suitable major at that school. Most college students change majors at least once.
