I realize that many people don't know what Alaska is like so I am making an AMA( ask me anything)

are you going to move to the regular united states for college?

I wish I lived in Alaska…

@Voberaptor I am going to move out of state to go to college.

What did Alaskans think of Sarah Palin before she became a household name?

Alaska seems so cool! I heard that you guys go to school like 9-4 instead of 8-3 is that true? And why?

Is it dark when you’re at school in the Winter?

What’s that like?

What part of the state are you in? My husband lived in Copper Center for four years - it’s about 100 miles from Valdez. He really loved the state. Is your area very cold? He told me the severity of the winter varies widely over the state.

Are you planning on returning to Alaska after you get out of school? Was it a good place to grow up?

@Cynosuree I was pretty young when she was elected governor but from what I remember evryone thought she was cool. Now no one likes her because she is an embarrassment.

@alwaysleah Most high school student go to school from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm. Elementary goes from 9:00 to 3:30 usually.

Ugghhh 7:30? That sounds terrible! Sooo earrllyyyy.

@ThisCouldBeHeavn In the winter it is usually really dark. But in the summer it is light outside from 18-20 hours a day. Even after the sun goes down it is still somewhat light outside. Really confusing to describe what it is like in summer.

@MaineLonghorn I live in Wasilla and Anchorage(parents divorced). Both are at the bottom of the state. In the winter, the farther north you go the colder. I don’t plan on living in Alaska after school. I plan on moving to San Fransisco after school.

@everyoneinthisthread sorry for all of the grammatical errors typing on phone

I’ve been to Alaska as a checkpoint flying on the way to Asia. I didn’t get a chance to go outside but it was light even into the early night.

OP, Is there alot of cultural or ethnic diversity? If so, which cultures or ethnicities? Do people still live in Igloos?

@609Represent there is a lot of diversity. German-Americans form the largest ethnic group at 16.6 percent of the population.
American Indians and Alaskan Natives are second with 15.6 percent.
Irish Americans ranked third at 10.8 percent of the population.
English Americans make up 9.6 percent of the population.
Hispanics and Latin Americans 5.5 percent of the population.
Norwegian Americans make up 4.2 percent of the population.
Asian Americans make up 4.0 percent of the population.
African Americans make up 3.8 percent of the population.
French Americans make up 3.2 percent of the population.
Native Hawaians and Pacific Islanders represent 0.5 percent of the population. I dont think anyone lives on igloos anymore.

Do you guys play the same sports we do even though it’s freezing outside? Do you feel lucky that you have an easier time per se getting into top universities?

@ThisCouldBeHeavn
I forgot to answer second question. I don’t really enjoy the winter in Alaska due to the fact that there is very little sunshine. I think the lack of sunshine in winter make the summer so much better.

What sports you play depen on what area you live in. My school is full of rich preppy kids and the sports at my school are hockey, soccer, tennis, skiing, football. I had no idea that we had an easier time getting into a tip university. No wonder there are so many kids at my school that go to Yale.

States like California, New York, and New Jersey are very competitive sates because there are just so many applicants.
