Sorry, I only got 1 reply on my other one and I REALLY need answers. I'm certainly not a Harvard applicant, but what are my chances at Pace University?

GPA: 1.88
ACT: 17 (retaking it in Feb)
African-American

My grades are bad mostly because my family and I were homeless and then my dad died all within these last four years. I was depressed and couldn't handle all of it at once. School on top of everything was too much. I talk about this in my essay.

I have 2 really good letters of recommendation, and very academic extra curricular activities which include mock trial, deca, debate, academic decathlon and student government... I've gotten a few really good awards and one is state wide.

I want to major in liberal arts.

Also, I want to send some poetry that I've written with my application to show talent and intellectual abilities. Is this a good idea?

I know my grades a really low, but I'm way smarter than they let on. What do you all think my chances are?

First of all, I’m really sorry! You’ve gone through a lot, and I think colleges will recognize this. I think that if you talk about your grades in your essays, and why they are low, the college may be more understanding. Plus the awards you’ve won will really help, it’ll show the colleges you are capable of academic achievement. I would DEFINITELY take the ACT again and maybe even the SAT as well (sometimes you score better on one test vs. the other). You need to raise those scores so that Pace can see a contrast in your scores vs you GPA. Pace has like a 75% admission rate right? You definitely have a strong chance if you raise you sat or act scores, work hard to raise your gpa senior year, and have solid essays.
So basically I think you can get in, it’s a match. Maybe think about adding some other schools as well, both safeties, and maybe even a few reaches (but not Harvard :P)

I admire your determination despite you hardships and good luck!

Somegirl, I am not sure if you are just goofing on us? With that GPA, can you even graduate? You want to major in liberal arts? What type of job will you get after graduation with a liberal arts degree? Maybe you should think about community college, proving yourself and then moving on to a 4 year college with a major that will get you gainfully employed?
