Today, I have declined NYU Steinhardt to accept Columbia school of General Studies.. I dont know if I did the right thing or not.. Its because NOW i am seeing in the website that Columbia GS is a COLLEGE... so I am very doubtful about my choice right now..

now another hard part....

I need to pick a major.. so I am trying to make a decision between, Comparative Literature, Psychology, Architect, Environmental Science, Film Studies, History, Political Science.

Could you please let me know what do you think about these majors?
And also tell me about my choice of Columbia GS over NYU.
I would be very greateful..

What’s wrong with that? (Sorry, I’m not at all familiar with GS so I might need this explained.)

Regarding your major, assuming you’re a freshman, you don’t have to choose your major now. And considering you have such a broad list of choices, it sounds like you should wait for a year or so, take some classes and see what interests you. There’s no reason to jump in now.

Regarding about what I think about those majors, well, I’m in engineering - so anything that isn’t science or math related doesn’t really interest me and the only major of those you listed that I would consider would be Architect.

What you could do is take one class of each (make sure you’re fulfilling requirements and not just taking classes you don’t need) and see what genuinely interests you.

Thank you Platsburgh,

Well, I dont know, Since its a liberal Arts college(and not a university), do you think i made a wrong decision declining NYU Steinhardt?

And my other problem is, I am a transfer student, I have already completed 60 credits… at another college, I was a Liberal Arts student there.

So now I dont know if I have enough room to take all the classes before i pick a major.

What do you think?

Columbia University is the institution that houses GS, Columbia College, and SEAS. In general, the term university is reserved for an institution with multiple schools and graduate/professional programs. College is often used to refer to one or more undergraduate schools within a university. In the case of a liberal arts college, like Swarthmore College, it suggests an institution that primarily confers undergraduate degrees to its students.

Really, the usage is flexible the discussion semantic. GS isn’t a liberal arts college. I think you may’ve read something about the classic, liberal arts approach to education have confused the two. That being said, choosing Columbia cannot be divorced from choosing the core - GS and CC are nearly identical in that respect. I would’ve suggested reading up on the core, the liberal arts approach, and Columbia in general before committing.

Thank you :)

Yea my advisor also sent me an email giving me the lowdown about the college vs. university.

My biggest problem is, i can NOT decide for anything… that is the main reason I havent picked any major yet… but I am thinking of comparative lit…environmental science, psychology, political science, architect… oh my …
