I am currently planning on transferring to either UCD, UCSD, UCR or UCSB for Econ/Business. 3 of these universities accept Math 16A/16B from my local CC as the 1 year calculus requirement. UCSD is the only one that doesn't accept it and requires Math 30-33 (4 semesters of calculus). On the UCSD website it says that you can transfer without the math done but it is highly recommended to finish it prior to transfer. With only 1 semester to go and already enrolling into 16B next semester, I can't enroll into any of them (I am also missing a pre-req just to get into Math 30).

This means at UCSD I have to take Math 20A, 20B, 20C and 20F as the equivalent. This is not a problem as I am willing to take the Math there. The problem is UCSD states that all the core economics classes require the math to be finished. The only exception is Math 20C and 20F which can be taken alongside with some of the core classes. I would need to finish Math 20A and 20B before even attempting any core classes. From my understanding this would mean F2013 (Math 20A) and W2014 (Math 20B). My questions are: Will I only be allowed to enroll in this single class for each semester? Are upper division electives allowed to be taken along with these or are electives strictly for senior year?

Any help is appreciated, thank you. This is all hypothetical of course as I have yet to even apply for transfer but I was concerned. I have emailed UCSD but they can only help so much. I am meeting my counselor next week.

Actually I have somewhat of a similar problem too, I’m applying for transfer this november and if I end up transfering to another school, I’d have to make up around 3-4 classes just to finish my lower divs for the major. Some of those classes are offered different quarters too so I dont know what I’ll end up doing. Talk to a counselor over email or phone at the school you’re transfering too and they can recommend something for you. If everything goes bad, we might to delay graduation or work extra hard senior year after all our pre-reqs are done.

If you go to UCSD just major in regular economics.

Your major doesn’t matter as much as you’d think. I know a guy who transferred to SD and he switched from Management Science to Econ and he doesn’t regret it.

Your GPA matters more than your major.
Your work and LIFE experience matters more than your GPA.

Ok so to help some of you guys out I am pretty sure you can mix the Math classes you need with some of the Upper Division Electives. Some of them have no requirements except that you be an upper division student. Some of the electives require that you only have to have Econ 1 and 3 done (which is your Econ at CC). Some require just Econ 2 which is an optional course that is recommended to take. I suggest taking Econ 2 because it unlocks a bunch of other classes. The number of UD electives, core classes, and advanced electives required vary by the majors (econ and management science)

So what you do is find out what Math you are missing. For example Math 10A-C or Math 20A-F or whatever. You have to take whatever math you are missing ASAP. Basically your first semester or two. Find out what classes have no requirements for Math (usually electives) and schedule that with your Math class. It’s a little different for the two but this should get you a good idea of what your course load will be like.

I am not a counselor but this is basically the information I was given by the econ advisor. I am not 100% sure if you can take electives junior year or what so this is all hypothetical. Go over it with your counselor or email the econ advisor here -> econugadvisor@ucsd.edu

I want to stress that a counselor will know WAY more and I may not be correct. Hell I haven’t even applied to UCSD so this is just from gathering info and may not be correct.
