I am in a tough situation. Help.

I am a cc student first year w/ 27 units done so far. 3.7 GPA.

I want to be a bio major.

I have not taken any bio classes yet b/c all my friends adviced not to do it b/c the teachers at my CC such.

This semester i am enrolled in calc and chem at my cc, and Bio 1 at UCLA extension which begins in a week.

I am doing porely in my calc and chem right now. Both C. However we are not even at the half mark and both my teachers allow a drop test.

My friend who is taking bio 1 at UCLA right now is telling me not to take it b.c i won’t be able to handel calc, chem, and bio all together. He said the class at UCLA is very tough.

I have several options.

Don’t take bio at UCLA now and focus on chem and calc and possibly pick up an easy history class.

I could take bio at a near by cc next fall. But that CC has only bio class and i would have to take a risk b/c it would be up to the teacher to enroll me.

I could take 2 bio classes at the same time at UCLA extension in the summer. The problem is it might overlap w/ my fall semester CC classes by a week. Also taking two bio classes at the same time might not be the best idea too

I could just risk it and take bio, chem, and calc all together

However chances are i might do bad.

But i really need to take bio at b/c i am a bio major.

What do u guys think i should do?

you should have taken bio a long time ago...maybe as your first classes...and I agree bio, chem and calc at the same time would be pretty hard. also I agree with your friend that don't take bio at UCLA as it will be tough and might result in a drop in your GPA. My advice would be search nearby CCs and ratemyprofessor.com and find a good teacher.

fei that is one of my options.

But like i said the nearby cc w/ a decent teacher only has one class, which gets filled up fast. So it's a big risk for me. I guess i can always be a chem major.

if i were u i would drop the bio class now and take 1-2 easy classes and then in the summer,i would just take bio there. if u wanna transfer to ucla u'd better not to get any B in the ucla's extension classes coz it would hurt u very badly. as i know so far uc will accept people who has completed 80% of the major courses before transfer, and u hv pretty fair gpa i believe even if u drop the bio class u r still in a good shape

btw i dont think 1 week overlapping is a big problem in cc

yidong. The problem w. that is i need to take 3 bio classes at UCLA, to complete the sequence if i don't get into UCLA (proly won't).

I am running out time. kind of.

Next year my primary classes will be o-chem 1,2 and calc 2.

I guess i could do

summer
bio 1

fall
ochem
bio 2

winter
bio 3

sprng
ochem
calc

thats proly my best bet. if the CC clases don't overlap w/ UCLA.

takin o-chem (one of the hardest chem classes) and bio 2 would really screw you over...you really need to think if you can handle the stress and load. and if you can go for it. are you going the doctor route?

trying to go for pharm school or back of PT.

The scary thing is once i transfer to UC, i will be taking 2-3 science classes if i want to graduate on time and i have too b/c of financial reasons.

I have to take 2 dificult classes at the same time. Can i handel it? I sure hope so.

if you want to go to pharmacy school, why not look at majoring in chemistry if you struggle with bio. You will have to take some bio of course, but maybe not as much??

b/c i need physio, anatomy, microbio, molecular bio, biochem. All these classes are not a part of chem major, but are a part of bio major.

thas weird...for pharmacy I always thought that the preferred major was chemistry or atleast biochemistry

uh huh...as did I..I know it is here at most of the schools I'm framiliar with, as I have a few friends, not to mention my mother involved in pharmacy.

times are changing. It used to be unecessary to even have a bachelors and u can get into pharm school, people use to go there right out of CC.

NOw it's it about 15% acceptance after thorough interviews.

anatomy, physio, microbio, biochem, molecular bio used to be taught at pharm schools, now it's a prerequisite.

anyhow

i am got several things trying to get done.

i emailed CC teahcers from nearby asking about posibility to add in their class

i emailed teachers from my cc asking when they will be teaching ochem next fall in case i'll have to do ochem and ucla extension at the same time.

Result so far: nothing, nobody emailed me back.
