CMU is one of the top engineering schools in the US. Period. [To cite surveys, US News says CMU’s peers think so: Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs | Rankings | US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering-doctorate/spp+10) A BS ME from CMU is well-respected and will provide you a solid foundation for a career in industry, professional school, or graduate studies. At the undergraduate level, the differences between these “top 10” schools in a particular major is trivial and will not effect your career prospects.

ucbalumnus has given you some excellent advice. ME is a broad field. Much of the work involves electronics, CS, and information systems (someone has to build the factories, machinery, and assembly systems and the equipment enabling software to interact with the physical world). Employment prospects are solid. The BLS data shows ME is one of the largest engienering disciplines (that means many employment opportunities) and median salaries are competitive with other popular majors (EE). The BLS forecast of below-average % growth (compared to other engineering disciplines) still represents more total jobs than all the EE areas listed. A BS ME will also provide a solid foundation for working in disciplines forecast to have higher growth rates as well.
