I am number 5 in a class of 43 students. How much will this hurt me?

My class size is 43 and im number 5 therefore my guidance counselor put me in the top 20 not top 10.. Does this eliminate all chances to a top 20 school?

How hard would it be to encourange #4 in rank to skip a few tests this year? :)

I honestly don’t know. #5/43 is probably what they see more than “top 20%”

But the thing is my school doesnt rank. My guidance counselor told me “you have the 5th best grades which would put you in the top 20% and thats what they will see”

If your school does not rank then you are not 5/43. You have no rank, just say your school does not rank when they ask for a rank.

Colleges are able to infer the class rank based on the GPA and the school info sent by the GC.

The percentile breakdown for the GPA range will show where you are in the second decile.

Google Tanya Harding and Jeff Gillooly. Problem solved.

Seriously though, I don’t think that many schools are going to admit or reject you based on that one stat. The overall strength of your transcript will be more revealing than whether you were in the first or second decile.

Good luck.

It really depends more on the past success of your school. If the top 4 are routinely admitted to HYPSM, then being #5 is still a pretty good spot to be in. But, if #1 only gets into State Public U on most years, your chances for a Top 20 school are not good, absent a hook, and particularly with <1300 SAT score.

With such a small class size I don’t think you are going to get smacked for not being in the top 10% when you were 5th in your class. That is simply one part of admissions. I wouldn’t put any effort into worrying about this one.

Lol the top ranked in the class of 2010 at my school couldn’t even say he’s top 10%. Not even #1 was considered top 10% cause there were only 6 people in senior year :P

Average class size? 2 lol
