White girl from a pretty prestigious all girls catholic prep school in NY (my grades may look low, but it's really hard to get A's in my school). There are only 2 APs offered before senior year (APeuro&american) because our cirriculum is super tough as it is. I did terrible freshman year due to apathy, but now I'm doing really well. I'm great at essays and interviews, and I know I'll be getting fabulous rec's from my guidance counsler, my american teacher, chem teacher & art history teacher (my intended major).

I will continue working there as well. This summer I'm attending a Journalism Workshop at Stanford University, as well as traveling to Italy in April & June (I don't know if I can include that anywhere, but I plan on writing my college essay on my reaction to The Birth of Venus).

SAT: 1890 (610M 630V 650W 10essay) - mediocre!
SATII: Chem 630 (Taking Lit & MathI in June)
I'm retaking the SATs in Oct & taking the ACTs (hopefully doing better on those then I did on the SATs)

Is there anything I can do to improve my chances and perhaps give myself an edge in ECs?

andrewcarta, your GPA is low for Indiana, and very low for Miami. Both are reaches, albeit Indiana being attainable, and Miami being unattainable. Miami's average weighted GPA is a 4.01 and Indiana's average unweighted a 3.3. Work hard this semester, finish strong, and no more C's!

Cumulative GPA: 4.05 unweighted. My school doesn't weight GPA's, but they count an A+ as 4.33, which is how my GPA is over 4.0 unweighted

LOL. Hey just saying to iwanttogotoMSU, this thread is from…2006 just might wanna check the date haha

Thanks in advance you are a kind person!
Background information:

-Indian Male

-I currently live in Columbus, OH.
I’ve moved around 3 times during my high school career due to instability.

-My school isn’t an ordinary one, it is a charter school for the arts. It only has 200 students in it. I had no choice but to go there because there were no other good schools in my area or in Columbus in general, the only good ones had a wait list to get in. I don’t believe my school has ever had a kid go to a top 40 university in its history. We also offer only 1 AP class which started this year, which I took. Seniors are allowed to take classes at a community college nearby and I plan on taking quite a few classes there. Until the 2009-2010 class year only Seniors could do this but now Juniors are allowed to do this.

-Parents are both immigrants and my income is below $30,000.

G.P.A.=3.5 Unweighted
We don’t have rank or weighted grades.

Test Scores: ACT 27 hoping to increase it to 30 by September.

Extracurriculars:
-I’ve interned for my teacher for a year.

-I’ve interned at the hotel my dad worked for the same year.

-I’ve helped make podcasts(Helped kids in American Government and Politics class make podcasts for Ohio Art Museum) and a video(Was put in to the history archive of The Columbus History Museum).

-Planning on interning for cancer cell research at OSU next year.

-I helped work back stage and I helped set up an art gallery for my school’s winter art festival.

-I performed a martial arts routine with my class for my school’s spring art festival.

-I’ve learned to play the guitar in high school.

-Planning on participating in an charity sponsored by school where we paint old doors and auction them off for a charity chosen by popular vote by the students.

-I might have over 700 hours of community service throughout my high school career.

-I performed in a few plays as a replacement for a sick person.

Classes:
I took the most challenging course load offered at my school and I’m planning on taking community college classes during Senior year.

The only AP class that my school offered was U.S. History and I took it this year, the first year offered.

Essay:
I believe the best part of my application will be the essays. I’ve had an interesting yet strange life. Here is an outline.

I was born a child to traditional immigrants in Pennsylvania. When I was an infant we moved to Alabama. I didn’t speak any English until I started Kindergarten which I started in Massachusetts. After that I had to go to India due to family issues. I was there for a short period of time but during that short period of time I forgot almost all of my English. I had to learn it again and was finally able to hold conversations by the end of 2nd grade. By the end of 3rd grade I moved to North Carolina. When Elementary school ended, Middle school began and it was the worst time of my life.

I attended 3 schools during 6th grade. First, I moved from North Carolina to Georgia. I lived in an horrible area and my mind was susceptible to peer pressure. From my peers I began to associate myself with the “Gangster” image, soon after I moved to Florida and this phase passed by. I moved to Florida because my parents lost their job and I had to live with my cousins. Due to my lack of social interaction and lack of friends over the years my peers began harassing me over the “War on Terror” and 9-11 , they harassed me for no reason with racial hate terms such as “Afghan Terrorist” “Iraqi scum” and “Turban head” also knowing that my parents had lost their jobs and me living with my cousins didn’t help my self esteem. It didn’t bother me much but at my age I thought too much of it.

Soon later I moved again, due to my parents having jobs again, to South Carolina where I had friends, whom I still cherish to this very day. This was where I finished 8th grade and 9th grade. It was a great time. But soon again my parents fell in to financial problems so I moved to my other cousins place in Virginia, where I finished 10th grade. This was when I started to question my Indian culture and how it is flawed.

Here I am now in Columbus, OH. The schools here were horrible but I managed to find myself here. Finally, living with my parents again and yet my life went from good to horrible in a matter of one night. During the Spring of 2009 my father had a heart attack, he “slept” for about 4-6 months. We were financially dependent on other family members and my brother. He came home in the summer, which was a great thing for me. I’ve noticed that some of my life situations were somewhat like Malcolm X’s. I now have this fascination with higher learning seeing as how it is my only road to save my kids from a child hood such as my own. I’ve given up on traditional Indian culture and stereotypes, I want to have fun in my life not spend my life impressing those who don’t even matter to me.

I commend you and thank you for even coming this far in to this post haha. So I was wondering how these schools would be for me:

George Washington University
Oxford College of Emory University
University of Miami
Ohio State University
Case Western Reserve University
Vanderbilt University(Pipe dream)

Any other suggestions would be really appreciated. I’m planning on doing Biomedical Engineering. Then moving on to law school. Thank you again!
