Hey guys
I just wanted to reach out to you all so that I can get rid of my feelings.
Alright so I am a student from India and I applied to 6 universities in the US and got rejected from all of them. I took the SAT 3 times and my super-score was around 1700. Then, I decided to take my ACT exam and got a 23. I am out of high school now and going to BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus to pursue Computer Science Engineering. However, I don't want to.
I secured 84% marks in my 12th class Examination. I just want to say that none of these standardized tests are my piece of cake. I am unable to do well in them despite taking countless tests and completing countless books. It really frustrates me, that I am going to college and I am still taking these tests and I am far away from the other application process.
I mean, I have tried every single time to do better, I always failed. Whether it's the SAT or the ACT. I am unable to improve. I mean, I always considered myself an average student with potential but all this makes me feel miserable and highly demotivated to give it another shot. All my SAT scores were differing by 10-30 points in either of the sections.

My brother graduated from USC and even I want to go there. It's what motivated me. But, I studied for these tests the whole year and I could never prove myself. I never gave up but I feel that my level is just really low to even do good on these tests. I really want to get into a good university in USA but all my confidence is flushed and I just feel miserable regarding this every single day.

Which 6 schools did you apply?
Did they match your grades and SAT/ACT scores?

You try not to feel sad. Instead try to focus on what you should do so that you are able to get through and achieve your goal. And more that that do well in the first year at BITS and make yourself eligible for a transfer. And that will also make more for a great essay.

So do more research and shortlist another list of colleges, check their Transfer Requirements and start working on those. Or better still, focus and finish your Bachelor’s at BITS with a great grade and plan on applying for a MTech/MBA.

After looking at the Freshman Profile -2012 for each of the schools that you mention, I think you should have applied to more “Reach” schools than 'Match" or “Safeties” with reference to your SAT score. Take a look at this list to get an idea. Also remember that the Engineering Schools for these colleges would be even more competitive.

Also just for reference this link clearly shows that Illinois Engineering SAT is in the range of 1920-2150 and for Purdue Engineering, the range is 1720-2010.

And do remember SAT is just one of the criteria, there would be many other factors like grades, class rank/percentile, ECs, Essays, Course Rigor, LORs which come into play for consideration and comparison when applications are sorted. So in my opinion, you aimed a little too high with regards to your SAT scores, as SAT is one of the quantifiable measure and is often the first filter that your application has to pass through.

Whatever you do,don’t give up. You have your whole life ahead of you to achieve your dreams and just because you didn’t get into a U.S college doesn’t mean you still can’t achieve them. Make sure to do really well in BITS and you can always transfer or come to U.S for post-bachelor studies. BITS Pilani is still a very good school! Do your best and you’ll be fine! Don’t be sad.

Yes, I agree that 1700 is pretty low for an international students. When colleges consider students, they give preference to those in the U.S. over international ones (or so I hear). When you apply to these colleges, make sure your grades are a little better than the average grades for the college. You can try for some “reach” school but it all shouldn’t be those types of schools.

Also, what are your ExtraCurricullars? Did you show colleges that you have an interest in this field? Some people are just not good testtakers and they are better in the actual field. Try to show experience some other way and not just keep retaking tests over and over again.

@student1122 are you asking something because i seriously didn’t get your question
As for your Situation , there is nothing to be sad about you are good unless you loose interest in your field, as college is just a part of your educational life you will have a lot of opportunities in life as for now you have a chance to Transfer to a U.S. University you like Or I assume if you are not yet in Dubai you could stay home a year apply again , maybe try to broaden your list to make sure you go to college next year in the states and also you can take that SAT ***** again and beat it up like a boss . At last it doesn’t matter where did you went to college to as long as posses the skills required .

P.S. Education is part of our lives , vice-versa is not True.

You really can’t be sad about something that is out of your control.

An American university education is not something that should be expected, even by American students! The education system is highly selective and finite; I don’t know why everyone expects to be given this option.

You are not your brother and, that being said, I’m going to be very blunt. Your tests are barely above what minimum scores should be. USC is highly selective so that will not happen for you unless you start to score at least 300 points above your current score. Finish your studies in your country and study hard. Perhaps after more education, you may pursue graduate studies anywhere and your test scores may improve.
