Alright, well I do pretty good in Math and English now, but my Reading and Science are bad on every test I take. I score about a 28 on English and Math but I get like 19's for my Reading and Science sections, what should I do? I try and read the passage but I don't understand a thing when I'm done with it. I barely remember the details I read making the specific questions even harder. I can read fine when I'm not time pressured but I don't have a choice on the ACT. I have tried underlining the idea's and stuff but it doesn't help. Everyone I talk to says the reading is very easy because the questions are so simple. Someone please tell me what I can do to raise my reading score to at least a 28 or so.

The science section seems to be good for the biology/graph/chemistry but awful for the physics/geology because I don't know how to answer the questions.

The passage that needs to be read in the science is just like reading in the english section. I can't understand what I'm reading. but when I'm at home lying in bed with the ACT book I actually understand what I'm reading and the questions are much eaiser but I use a bit more time.

What should I do? I won't get into any of the colleges I want to without at least a 28 on the ACT. I only have the April, June, and September test's left before I can apply!

I’ve only taken the ACT’s once and I just got my score today, but it seems like your problem is mostly mind over matter. If you understand the reading perfectly fine without the pressure of a clock, then you have to put yourself in that same frame of mind during the actual test.

My personal problem was I didn’t have enough time to finish the 4th passage and it was a science related passage which is my weakest. But because I took my time on the readings I was strongest at I did well overall. I actually completely guessed at the last passage questions because I ran out of time and got a 28 overall in reading.

So based on my experience and what you say, I think the best thing to do is just relax and act like youre at home reading and do the passages youre best at first so you get the most possible questions right.

So would a good way to improve be to read a couple passages every night before I go to bed? That way when the test comes I’ll be completely comfortable with the types of passages I get? Is this a good way to approach the reading?

Yeah that would definitely help. The main thing with ACT reading, if you want to do all the passages, is to skim the passage while still understanding the main idea. When you practice, you can slowly read faster and get comfortable with the time frame. You want to have as much time for the questions as possible.

Are you a sophomore?
Take physics in your junior year, and then give the ACT. Taking the course familiarizes you in many different ways.

I’m a Junior. I took Honors Bio, Chem, and now IB Biology

@ OP, Good news and bad news. Good news–Colleges weigh the English and Math more (yes they still find the comp very important). Evidence- Visit a colleges website and you will see that they have the middle 50% of scores for only the comp, math, and english; not the science or the reading. Bad news–These 2 sections have the worse curve, so it hurts your comp more if you are bad at these sections.
