Apple's new operating system is scheduled to come out "spring 2007" which means anytime from tomorrow to June. But since June is before July (and august), your new computers will definitely come pre-installed with them.

is there a discount for the regular macbook (not pro)? if so, how much?

I spoke to a wharton student and they said that theres really only one program that wharton students use that cant run on macs (sabre?), but that all the huntsman computers have it and its mostly group work done there anyway so its not really a big deal. Is that true?

Yes. Right now the $1099 MacBook is $899 and the $1299 MacBook is $1099.

Certainly nothing to sneeze at! :-)

By and large, yes. Every Wharton program you'd need is on the lab computers (which makes sense to use because otherwise you'd have to buy it).

I was in one of Wharton's statistics classes (STAT-111) and the software we used (JMP) was available for Windows and Mac. But I still used it in the lab because why would I want to pay for that stuff?

wow! thats a great deal! so when will we be eligible for said discounts?

Do you know how HS students can get discounts on MACs? My D needs an IMac to edit films on.

As soon as you get your PennKey (or whatever it is that gives you access to CampusExpress these days), so I believe that will be mid-summer.

Unfortunately Apple does not offer individual discounts for K-12 consumers. Your best bet is to find somebody at Penn (faculty, staff, undergrad, grad student) who will buy a Mac for you.

But you are definitely making the right move getting an iMac for film editing. It is an absolutely wonderful machine :-)

I'm thinking of buying a MacBook or MacBook Pro for college, and I was wondering how much of a discount is given on the most expensive MacBook, and the cheapest MacBook Pro.

My grandmother wants to buy me one, but I don't want her paying $2,000 ($1,800 after regular Education discount), if I can get it for significantly less.

Should I just wait until the summer to buy the computer?

The most expensive MacBook is the black one at $1379.

The cheapest MacBook Pro is currently $1599. This is a special deal that is a full $200 off the regular education discount, so I do not know how long it will last...this means that I would buy it right now.

HOWEVER, it is too soon for prefrosh to buy computers--I think. I will ask the Computer Connection's manager tomorrow.

The manager says once you have paid your deposit and receive a confirmation letter from Penn, you can bring that letter to the Computer Connection (36th & sansom) and get your Mac.

JohnnyK, how can I become your successor? Does it pay well? Does it require knowledge about computers?

You have to kill me or wait until I graduate. It pays reasonably well and you'd be quite the bad campus rep for a computer company if you didn't know much about computers ;)

thanks for checking that out for me. now i have to find a way to get my grandmother from CT to PA.

and Venkat, we might have to fight to the death for this job. Be prepared.

Are there shipping options? I'm thinking about getting it mid-summer and I think I'd want to play around with it a little at home before going off to college with it.

does Penn offer discounts on any other laptops besides apple? IF so , which ones?

Yes, you can get the computer shipped to your house. When you get your PennKey later this spring or summer, you can go to Campus Express (<a href="http://www.campusexpress.upenn.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://www.campusexpress.upenn.edu/</a>) and order it there.

You're better off with the Mac ;)
