I am the struggle

Question: Does anyone know of any books that focus on getting high SAT scores? (I have the god awful giant book and I took a class, but that was highly ineffective because it happened months and months before the actual test.)

Context: I'm trying to get my SAT's up, however because of various circumstances (don't put off your SAT II's, kids) I can't take it again until October, so I have a lot of time to do much better. I received a 2100 (700 M and 710 W which I can live with, 690 CR which I cannot). Looking to get all of those scores up, but especially the CR.

And my bonus situation is that SAT test days almost always conflict with marching band, so worst case scenario is that I don't get another chance to retake. For that reason, I want to take the ACT in September, just in case. What should I look into regarding prep for that? Classes, books, and Jamaican voodoo all appreciated.

I’ve heard that Gruber’s is good, especially its math section. I’ve also heard that Direct Hits 1 and 2 are great for learning SAT vocabulary for the CR (I plan to get them myself, in fact), as well as The Essential 500 (or something like that).

Another thing : people recommended that you take plenty of practice tests for the real thing.

Personally I like Barron’s 2400 book, it doesn’t have very many practice problems but it has excellent tips which will help you approach closer to 800s on each section, and you can always buy additional Barron’s practice books so you can practice a lot of problems.
