I am at a new high school and will be a part of the first graduating class in 2016. I have straight As and excellent ECs so far and I feel that I have a chance to go to a top level school such as Stanford or MIT. Last year as a freshman I took Algebra 2 and passed it easily with an A. Because my school is new, they are trying out new things and they pushed me into Calc 1 at my local Community College instead of taking Pre Calc from my math teacher. Unfortunately I am struggling through the class so far and have decided to drop out of the class and take Pre Calc to further develop my skills. Will a W (withdrawal) on my transcript from my sophomore year trying to take Calc hurt me when I am applying for college?

i mean, it’s understandable why you did it. can you take the class next year? just do well in precalc.

Yes, I will be taking the class again next year. I am just wondering if colleges will look down on me for it.

i don’t think that they will. and it helps that you’re taking the class next year, because it’ll show you’re capable of taking it… assuming you do well, of course. it’s not like you’re dropping the class, and then never going back to it. i think that would look bad; dropping it and then never proving yourself.

if you get an a next year, even with a withdrawal on your transcript, it will look better than if you took the class this year, and did badly.
