@Thumper1 makes an excellent point. The same parents that may pay $65k+ per year for HYPS, may not be willing to pay $65k+ for - say BU.
Also, if two “essentially similar” schools (for instance Purdue and Ohio State), have wildly different net costs due to merit awards, parents who may have initially agreed to pay $45k per year for an OOS public, may suddenly say “no” to Purdue if after a merit award from tOSU will bring the net cost down to $20k.
There aren’t many parents who will an extra $25k per year ($100k) when they don’t see the need to have an essentially similar school.
(don’t flame me over Purdue vs OSU…I just randomly picked them…could have picked others).
