I aspire to be a Med Student, which path should I take.

Hi CC,

I need your opinion(s) on something. I plan to take the medical pathway as my future, but am not sure how to go about doing so.

So I was accepted to various UCs such as Irvine and Santa Barbara (Waitlisted to UC Davis and San Diego; probably because I accidentally put Bioengineering rather than BioSci as my major, d’oh!). Should I attend one of these 4 year research Universities, complete my premed prereq.s, and apply to med schools from there?

OR is it a better option to go to Community College, transfer into a school like UC Davis or UC San Diego after 2 years, and then apply to med schools from there? I’m not sure if there is a bias against community college students, I’ve seen mixed responses from people (this pathway could save a potential 60k - 70k dollars, but if it will ruin my chances of success, then I’d rather not go this way).

Appreciate your replies.

No, don’t start at a CC

UCI and UCSB are fine for Calif premeds. Which one do you like better?

Do you qualify for a Cal Grant?

What are your parents saying about paying?

@mom2collegekids Thanks for the reply, I don’t qualify for Cal Grant (family income is about 100k flat), but am hoping for other ways of making money. I think I’d take UCI over UCSB, but I’d rather wait for the waitlist results, and If I happen to get into either of those schools, I’ll change my major to bio. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Thanks again!
