I.B. Diploma - Whats it good for?

I was just wondering, do Universities and colleges in the States use I.B. Exam results purely for giving credit, or are they also an important part of the admissions consideration? I ask 'cause my predicted grade for the I.B. Diploma was quite high, but the final results were terrible my standards. Will this really hurt my case for admissions - my Predicted Grade was a 42 (including 3 bonus points) bt my final total was only 36 (only consolation was that everyone messed up big time).

Important for admissions and for placement.

I doubt it'll matter much, as long as your marks in the classes themselves were fine. Don't worry too much about it. If you do well it'll help you, if not it won't hurt you.

Ok bottom line ( Atleast i think it is after listening to many people)

IB is very important in terms of admission becuase they reflect the academic rigour of your work ( IB is considered on of the toughest courses around)

36 is amazing ( trust me, if you have taken 6 tests) even if they are not by your standards they are according to universities.

Hmmmm....By the way, assuming I do get in, how much credit is usually offered for say, a 6 in Bio (HL) or Chem (HL) etc? Is it a whole years worth or what?

KRUX: what kind of grades did you get on your quarterly/semester report cards? I mean were they on a scale of 1-6 of A-F?

um i have a question about the IB program...sorry this doesnt have anything with the original question, but hope you can answer it for me.
i
m not doing full IB but i
m doing 4 IB HL subjects and 1 SL subject. altho the work load is lighter than full IB, I feel this is quite a challenging course, cuz i
m doing sthing near full IB and 1 more HL subject than what is required. would this be at ALL an advantage for me if I were to apply to the competitive schools(like ivy and stanford for example) since i
m doing 4HL?
to make my schedule even more challenging,i
m planning to take another IB subject(HL) in my senior year.(i
m a junior currently) I know i
ll only be able to do half of the program, but do you think it
ll help my chances of getting in those schools?
btw,the reason i didnt do full IB is becasue my counselor CONSTANTLY kept telling me the U.S doesnt need it..but I fould out it helps you tremendously. bad choice,i regret it.
thanks for your help to anyone who replied

Well im also doing four HL subjects but as a part of the IB diploma and i understand what you mean when you say that 4 hls is a pretty big course load. Actually i still think that its pretty wise of you to do 4 HLs even if your not doing the full thing, and I beleive that it will help you a great deal as US universities only grant credits for HL subjects and the SL ones are taken rather lightly. Either ways its better then doing nothing at all and its somewhat equivelent to taking some ap classes so i think you will be looked at in the same category. Colleges always recomend that one takes the most rigorous coursework that their school offers, and that would have been ib diploma in your case so it might be held against you but i dont think thts very likely as I know many people who did ib certtificates and still got into top colleges. Maybe you should still try doing the extended essay as colleges really value it because it shows how independant and propelled a student is when it comes to doing research and such
i hope this helped

thank you so much for your help!!
btw,do u think its late to start the extended essay now?its already january.

umm..you said that you are a jounior...so no . Most people do their extended essays in the summer between grades 11 and 12, I havent even decided what Im writing mine about yet:S. So u are ok !!good luck

thank you so much!! i appreciate it very much. just out of curiosity, what schools are u interested in?

umm.. well I wanna major in film so tisch (nyu) would be my first choice as its the best. But also HYPS and U of chicago...but it depends on the aid/scholorships that im offered really.. what about u?

wow sounds good!btw, where do u live?i`m japanese but i live in malaysia.
my top reach schools are cornell and rice. boston university, george washington are some of my reach schools and maybe SUNY. did u take the sats yet?
o and thanks for all your help!

Im egyptian but i live in Kazakhstan.Im taking the sats this january...well in two weeks to be more correct :S but i also realized that I will have to take the new sat next year, what about u?
ur welcome!

o cool! umm no i havent taken the SAT yet,i
m planning to take it in may. but i havent done much studying at all...what subjects are you planning to take the SAT2? can u tell me some of your extra-curriculars if thats ok with you.
o yea ive been thinking about doing the extended essay, but wud the IBO even look at it/grade it?i
m not in TOK so...

i dno for sure about the sat 2s yet. But i think Bio M, lit, and spanish with listening, maybe french also but im not so sure yet. what bout u? I have a lot of ecs....i play a lot of sports...bball, soccer and vball, i dance ballet, MUN, Amnesty INT. , school newspaper, class president, i do foreign language stuff, like take lessons and tech others for CAS hours, community service in general, drama club and other such activities. I dont play and music music though. What about u? look i think you should ask ur ib coordinator about the ee thing, and you dont need to be taking tok in order to do the ee. the only thing you need tok for is for the tok paper. But ask your councelor because im not posetive how it works.

r u gonna ask for fin aid or scholorships or something? andwhat ib classes r u taking?

o ok thanks for the great idea about ee!
umm i
m probably going to take math(1C or 2C;not sure yet),bio, and probably lit. umm my ecs are playing tennis(im on varsity),bio competition tutorials, internship wtih veternairan, volunteer work at animal shelters, can play 3instruments(piano,flute,clarinet)thats about it. i really need to get better ec
s like you do.
umm currently im taking HLmath,HLenglish(A2),HL japanese(A1),HLBio and SLphysics. how about u? umm i dunno if im going to apply for financail aid/scholarships yet, i havent done much research on that. how about u?
do u think taking an IB social studies(maybe at HL) would like make my transcript look better???
o and is your school big? if it is, can you tell me some groups/organizations that are popular at your school? cuz my school is very very small with like barely any clubs or organizations, so i
m thinking about maybe starting one on my own.it
ll be great if you can give me some ideas.

well I take English A1 HL, Math studies, Bio HL, History HL, Econ HL, French sl, Spanish SL B self - taugh, TOK. i just moved to kaza this year and the school really isnt very big and thts why me and this teacher started an mun club, u could start tht also you could start student council. It will probably work well as my school is also really small and it worked there- there are like 20 ppl in grade 11..so by small i mean small! I even have to take some classes all by myself.

O wow your taking 7IB?with 4HL?thats really tough,i shudnt be complaining!is your first language english?i just moved to my school this year too actually, well i moved here at the end of sophmore year like in april so i only had 2mnts of sophmore yr.because of the japanese school system,i literally skipped my sophmore year(only 2mnts) do you think this is sthing to write on my transcript cuz since i skipped it, some of my ec`s only last for about 2yrs or so..
my school actually does do mun!but im doing it next yr cuz i was just too worked up with other things.
o btw, how did u get to teach others ur foreign languages?like who do you teach and where? and what exactly is amnesty int??
