which would you think would be better for a top i-banking job between UChicago and UPenn (econ major in both)? I'm trying to pick between these two schools, both of which I love!

Thanks!

Caveat emptor, UPenn CAS gets overshadowed by Wharton. For example, most of the hot shot recruiters that come to UPenn are looking at the undergraduate business school, Wharton. UPenn CAS gets the sloppy seconds. This has been verified anecdotally and I'm sure it's a phenomena that occurs at NYU CAS and Michigan non-Ross as well.

A good GPA from Chicago econ will put you in a strong position, provided the rest of your resume is up to scratch.

My vote is for Chicago.

Go to Chicago.....

I second Chicago.

You never clarified whether you're Wharton or CAS. if you're CAS, go to Chicago. but of course, Columbia is better. ;)

Wharton doesn't offer an "econ" major -- CAS has an Econ major, though.

Actually the official title of a Wharton undergraduate degree is a bachelor of science in economics I believe, so i know where he's coming from. But anyway it isn't a real economics degree (it's business).

By the way, Columbia econ is not better than Chicago econ. For the record...

Yep, CAS...10char

--Not true for Penn. Look at the CAS career services link below, which shows how CAS students fared at I-Banks and Consulting firms, among other jobs:
http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/college/2007cpsurvey.pdf

And for other class years, and further information:

As you can see, CAS kids do pretty well when it comes to I-Banking and Consulting.
The guys that really steal all the business jobs from the Wharton kids at Penn, however, are the Engineering students. :)

Just to point something out, 61 of those kids are Wharton/CAS and another 26 are SEAS/CAS. I would imagine most of them (at least the 61 from Wharton) are in banking/consulting. I also assume that they are the ones that landed the jobs at Mck, GS, MS, JP, Bain, BCG. That leaves CAS kids for good jobs, but not necessarily the most desired ones.

Chicago. 10

Both are good. Penn hires into NY while Chicago tends to hire more into Chicago (duh...but it's true -- there are many more Penn analysts in NY than Chicago ones, but more Chicago guys in Chicago).

However, I'd recommend Penn. You'll have an easier time getting a higher GPA, and it is completely untrue that CAS students get overshadowed by Wharton. If anything, you have an advantage over almost any other school because of places like Blackstone that only recruit actively at Wharton (and Harvard and Columbia). At Chicago, you won't get exposure to some of the truly elite places.

Finally, you will meet a lot of very well-connected people at Penn, moreso than at Chicago. Freshman year, I was in a hall with two kids whose dads were Fortune 500 CEOs, and am good friends with them.

Really, whoever said CAS kids are overshadowed is a total idiot. Hell, I'm a sophomore with no connections and a 3.3 GPA and I have a front-office banking internship this summer (debt capital market summer analyst).

nodnard, you're mistaken. BX (PE and M&A) recruits at Chicago as well.

Care to qualify this statement?

Yes.

More people at Penn + Ivy pedigree + lots of legacies = more well-connected people.

I'm not one for anecdotal evidence, but if you want me to reel off all the people in my year alone with crazy connections, I can send you a PM.

And are you sure BX actively recruits for PE at the undergrad level at Chicago? They didn't as of a year ago.

Disclosure: I chose Penn over Chicago.

I am not saying Penn is by any means a bad choice. I would say the decision should be made on which school you like better and where you fit in. However, the data does not directly support the fact that CAS kids place all that well into the top firms. I find it hard to believe that CAS kids can beat out Wharton kids. There might an exception here or there, but the overall general trend, I imagine, would be Whatron gets the top jobs.

Yes, BX PE recruits at Chicago. With the exception of some boutiques, Chicago gets the same recruiters as Wharton. Nodnard, your anecdotal "evidence" doesn't do anything for me. I'm UChicago kids could rattle off famous people as well. Bottom line, Chicago econ > Penn econ and Wharton > UChicago > UPenn CAS in recruiting.

thanks for all your help guys! in the end, i did end up choosing based on where i think i'd have the best experience and so picked penn. hopefully it'll work out :)
