Just a quick question. How stable and lucrative is I-banking if one comes out of a strong UG (Wharton-type) and goes onto a strong grad school (also Wharton-type). Additionally, how does it compare to a career in a normal medical field?

Medicine isn’t even close in terms of income potential, that said lots of people wash out of each, but not sure of the percentages (think banking is higher assuming u can grad bschool and med school). So, in expected value terms it may not be that different as medicine is more stable once you’re in.

What everyone needs to keep in mind is that not every Wharton grad is of interest to banks. There are skill sets and personalities that are more attractive for the jobs. If you’re good, no firm will let you go. Many burn out or are not good and are let go. This is not a career for lovers of stability, though many of us have worked for one bank for decades.

There are few top doctors who make anywhere close to what a top banker makes, but their careers are much more stable.
