I-Banking

Is investment banking worth the trouble? I know its a blunt question but im a college freshman transfering to Fordham U. next year and im trying to figure stuff out. Hows the pay straight out of college working 80 hours a week? Also do u recomend getting my MBA right after my Bachelors or getting a job that may pay for my graduate school.

Thanks

The most successful bankers are all those who truly enjoy their jobs. I know it sounds cliche, but honest how long can you last working 100+ hr weeks doing something you hate, even if the pay is phenomenal?

Most kids do not get their MBA right out of college, most work first (generally anywhere from 2-5 yrs), also depends on what you do; you may not need a MBA.

If I were you, I would start by doing a bit of research on what an Investment Bank is and what exactly they do (believe me, they offer many different services/divisions other than Investment Banking Division). And under IBD, you might want to research what group you want to work in. Also reading the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and other periodicals that give you a general idea of the market is very helpful.

Good Luck

IB gets a lot of attention because it is the highest paying job out of college that can lead to multimillion dollar career after the 3-4 year stint and MBA. <sarcasm alert=""> There are actaully peoe who would rather work 40 hours and make 50k at the beginning and probably finsh out at 100k or so (accounting etc). Every one talks about that field but the overwhelming majority won't make it. As someone put it in previous posts in this forum 98.75 won't. look up all kinds of careersand see what interests you. But let me make myself clear investment banking is a great springboard to other very pretigious jobs in the finance industry particularly Hedge Funds, Private Equity and Venture Capital.</sarcasm>

Kids that haven't worked in the real world don't understand how, over time, many people get beaten down by even a 40 hr job. Many people consider 50 hours a week in an office job, too much. 100+ hours is no joke.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how the eff do you work 100+ hours a week? what do these people do during those hours?

I Don't know what the "average" week is but 100 is not a joke. Think of it this way, tax firms get a lot of work last 2 weeks before the April 15th and people work way more than they would usually. Now Investment Bankers have a lot of deadlines, so if there's something that needs to be done by the end of the day they will stay up all night to get it done.

A friend of a friend fondly recalled the time they had to work six straight days on a deal. As an anecdote of I-Banking's intensity.

He probably had naps. :)
