Well, to me, a safety school means you’re overly qualified to get in. I would say you might be a good match for IU, but I wouldn’t say it’s a safety school for you.

It’s a safety school.

As long as you have the average grades it’s a safety, because the school accepts 80% of applicants.

SoCal, I suggest you and mhakim33 read this explanation of definitions:

http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/articles/find/MatchReachSafety.asp

His scores are NOT at the high end of the pool at IU, therefore, it’s not a safety school FOR HIM.

Regardless of what the definition says…His scores are better than 50% of the people who apply there, and the school accepts 80% of all applicants.

He’s pretty much guaranteed admission, so I would call it a safety.

I had pretty much the same stats as you, though my SAT was slightly higher.
They even gave me a little $$$$. You’re pretty much in…because like SoCal said, the acceptance rate is 80% ish. And they ARE gonna start getting more competitive, but you’re still in great shape.

I live in Bloomington and am an IU alum so my information is from recent articles(August) in the local paper and the alum magazine.

This year only 70% of applicants were admitted versus 80% as reported in the USNWR information. Average SAT was up 25 points this year to 1146. Roughly 30% of the freshman were in the top 10% of their HS class. Two-thirds were in the top quarter. Applications were also up 18% this year.

You’re probably in, but it will also depend upon the application pool. There are a couple of reasons for my more cautious reaction.

The standards for admission are getting tougher. That’s been published in numerous places. The standards for out of state students have always been tougher than in state.

The number of applicants has been increasing.

Indiana is also considered a state school. There have been a few state legislators calling for IU to admit more in state students. This year’s freshman class had more out of state students than previous classes which may renew those calls for more in state admissions.

Good Luck!

I was waitlisted with very similar stats…
