I bet you'll never be able to guess what this thread is about!

Hey all,

I'm a senior and applying to colleges. It's a stressful time (and I'm freaking out). I know compared to most people here I really don't have fantastic stats, but I was just wondering what you all thought on my chances at these schools.

Anyway:
I have dual citizenship and speak fluent Greek (mother greek, father american). [Will this even count for anything? Diversity factor?]

I am in the top 13% of my class with a 3.96 weighted gpa, class rank of 26 out of 190 at a public school.
Last year I took AP US History and scored a 5, and AP Psychology and got a 4.
I got a 730 on my History SAT II
Just took the Lit SAT II today and think i did well (650-750 range).
I got a 690 Critical Reading, 690 Writing, but a 530 in math I'm taking it again and hopefully will do better!

This year I'm taking AP Environmental Science, AP English, and AP French, as well as Statistics, Honors Global Studies, and Senior Seminar.

Club-wise:
National Honor Society
President of Environmental Club 11-12 (member 10-12)
Photography Editor of Yearbook 12 (member 11-12)
In Drama Club (Secretary to Thespian Troupe 1154) 9-12, several lead roles in dramas.
Chorus 9-12
Chronicle (school newspaper) 10-11

Volunteered twice a week at a local elementary school and tutored students (about 45 hours total).
Volunteering for Friends of the Wissahickon and am doing several service activities/cleanups. Estimate around 40-50 hours by end of this school year.

Worked for a little over a year at a food store (10-11) and now work at a veterinary hospital as an aide.

Here are my schools:

Vassar College (first choice, i'm absolutely in love)
Oberlin College
Connecticut College
Trinity College (father went there)
Pitzer College
American University
Penn State- Main Campus
University of Pittsburgh

Thanks so much!
-Mary
Philadelphia

We need to see your UW GPA, since all schools weight differently.
Vassar is very hard to get into for girls especially. Pitzer is also pretty selective I think. You'll have better luck with the others.
Do plenty of practice to bring up your SAT math score to improve your chances.

How exactly do I convert my GPA to unweighted? Is it just core classes or does it include specials, like art and things like that. How about electives like taking an extra math class, or a psych class?

Thanks for the info so far. Anyone else? Be as mean as you like.

Take all your grades, give yourself a 1-4 on them depending on what you got in the class (A= 4, B= 3, etc), get the sum, and divide by the number of classes taken. That's your unweighted GPA.

Putt1's method works only for full-credit classes, though. Leave out classes like gym and art unless you have an algorithm for counting them correctly.

I can't recall exactly all my grades for each class right now, but when I know I'll tell you all my unweighted GPA.

Anyone else have any insight based on the other info I provided?

bump

i don't mean to be annoying. but anyone else?

I still can't figure out my UW GPA but highest GPA possible is a 4.5, i think. Anyone? I'm sorry i'm just really stressing about this whole process and my college counselor really isn't giving me any advice. That's why I've turned to CC for help.

Also, can anyone suggest some good safety/match schools that are liberal arts? I would prefer if they were not stereotyped as "conservative" schools.

pomona college!
you have to check it out...

I think Pomona is just going to be another reach school (i believe it's more difficult than pitzer is), so I think if I'm applying somewhere all the way on the other side of the country it will just be Pitzer. Even if I do get into Pitzer, I don't know if I'll be able to afford to go there. We'll see..

Anyone else? Pleaaase :)?
