I blame this school for my depression

This school has gotten so bad since the pandemic. The admins and professors have become lazy because they had it so good during the pandemic. The student life at this school is so bad. Like the only things that someone can do here is play video games. No major events happens, the sport teams are bad, and the career fairs are a joke. I was someone who was outgoing and happy to meet new people, now I just sit in my dorm room all day hopping to get out of here. I tried to meet new people when I first came here, but the student population is just bad. There is like 1 girl to 10 guys and every person is just super awkward.

So many students here cheat and no one cares. I saw a professor see a student with his phone out during a exam and he just didn’t care. All of this is just depressing and it takes a toll if you are experiencing this day after day month after month. My advice is come to a school that suits you personality wise.

I completely agree.

Clearly your school is not being a good fit for you. What are you doing about that? have you started looking at transfer options? sometimes a January transfer is possible, but if not for next September.

No school (or job or person) can “make” you be depressed. You can be in depressing situations, but what matters is how you choose to deal with it.

However, this quote suggests that what you are thinking may be well out of alignment with reality. The pandemic was hugely challenging for admins and profs. Particularly for profs, the workload increased exponentially.

Actually, more like 3- but yes it is one of the more gender-imbalanced schools. Did you know that when you decided to attend?

It sounds like you are reacting to COVID restrictions and effects. Many students are depressed and for some reason few are tracing their mood to COVID changes on campus.

That said, the gender imbalance sounds like a real issue.

Seems like it’s time to transfer somewhere else. Perhaps a school where engineering is a focus but overall a larger school that will attract a more diverse student body. That said, you’re in school in Hoboken, and just across the river to NYC. So if the campus is a drag it would seem like you’ve got a ton of stuff you can do right out your doorstep.

Maybe go to a different part of the country? A school that participates in D-1 sports? Reach out to other schools, find out how they’re managing the pandemic. Remember, you chart your own course…

My D could have written this post a few months ago, but she is at a completely different school. It is definitely pandemic-driven. She is getting counseling and doing SO much better now. Maybe you can find a therapist to talk to?

I am so glad you said it was “pandemic-driven.” I really hope more young people- and parents, and schools- “get” this. Counseling could benefit almost all of us right now.

Before making any big decisions, I would try to get help for the depression. Maybe there is a group therapy available too.

I think not being around people for over a year created social anxiety in a lot of people, especially young adults who are learning how to interact with their new peers at college. I hope OP is able to get some help, too, because it sure changes your outlook on everything when you’re happy.
