I can answer questions now!

Oberlin has a pre-med department, and top-notch academics. My friends who are in Biology and Chemistry love it, especially the labs. The science programs are pretty strong. I'm a computer science major, and I'm taking CS and Physics this semester, and they really seem to know their stuff pretty well.

Whoa, I defend you on the College Life forum, and in reply you tell me that I shouldn't even be here?

Fine, be that way!

Aw, sorry.

Ack, just realized that I sounded a bit harsh there.

Apology accepted anyway :)

Yes, so back on topic, I am willing to answer any questions you have!

I am a first year majoring in politics and history, so I'm more than happy to answer any questions from that angle.

Hi TheOneCurlyFly !! I am very interested in this school
I have some question About Oberlin :
1. Do they have good math or economics depart?
2. do they have Muslim club or something like that?
3. what grad school do student go after Oberlin?
4. job acceptance ?

Thank you so much for this help !! by the way , did you had great SAT scores ? wat made Oberlin to take ?
if you will help me that would be nice !!:)

Which is better Colgate or Oberlin? :D

I'm TheOneCurlyFRY, not Fly, just for future reference :)

Yes, they have good math and econ departments. I think almost every department here is pretty strong. I know a math major, and she loves it here, and I know a few people studying econ, too. If you have specific questions, I'll ask them for you.

I think they do have a Muslim association, and they also have a Kosher-Halal eating co-op that serves only Halal food.

A lot of Obies do go on to good grad schools, I don't know which ones, it depends by department, I guess. And of course we get good jobs, we have recruiters on campus and stuff. Your questions are too general.

I did not get spectacular SAT scores, they weren't bad though (670 W, 720 M, 800 V) - they accept you based on a lot of things. Academic record, standardised test scores, essays, recommendations.. it's impossible to say why one person got in and another didn't.

Oh, and Ajay, Oberlin >>>>>>>>>>>> Colgate.

is it true that if we arent music people but would like to be music people that oberlin will help us? i heard somewhere that this is a great place even for those who havent started on music.

is it particularily hard to maintain a high gpa there? are the students extremely competitive?

thanks

And why is that Kriti? :D

Yes, you can start to learn music there, from Conservatory students (who are like professionals), and I think you get credits for it. If you appreciate music in any way, though, it's a GREAT place to be.

I'm only three weeks into classes, so I'm not sure if keeping a high GPA is hard. The classes are not a cakewalk, though. I don't think the students are competitive, it seems pretty laid back, like everyone wants to learn to better themselves, not to top other people. The classes are very work intensive, though.

Ajay, I am not a good person to ask for an unbiased response. I didn't even consider Colgate's acceptance, I'd already chosen Oberlin by the time it arrived.

I've had some experience with music as a non-conservatory student, so I can say some more about that. If you have never played an instrument before, you can definitely start learning here. If you are starting a brand new instrument or don't want credit, your option is to take lessons with a student for about $7 a lesson (you can get a list of students who can teach from one of the conservatory offices). If you have been playing an instrument you can audition to get lessons for credit, which means it's free, and you'll be placed with a student or professor.
Ensemble options are more limited for college students, but there are some mainly for college students.
And if you just want to play in a band there are lots of people around looking to start groups and just have fun playing together. Plus the concerts are great! If you just want to hear tons of different music genres the opportunity here is endless.

About the GPA, it depends a lot on the classes and how tough the professors grade you. There is a lot of work and the professors expect a lot from you, but the nature of the work for each class differs so it sort of depends on that. Papers are usually graded tough, but if you don't have to write a lot in a certain class, then your grade for that class may be higher compared to a writing-intensive one. Atleast in my experience, I think I've gotten the grade I've deserved - even if it wasn't an A, because I know that I'm still learning and figuring out how to write stronger papers. Of course you also have to put in the effort to do well and your grade usually reflects that.

I haven't experienced much competitiveness at all.

TheOneCurlyFry, would you, please, answer my question.
I am an intl full finaid applicant. Have decent ECs. Is Oberlin really offering a comparatively generous full aid for intls? Maybe another college choice is more suitable in my situation? The problem is, only 6 universities in US offer need-blind admission for intls...

thank you for info in advance. really needed.

Hello TheOneCurlyFRY ! This is TheWonder , I got some problems with my account so made new one. First of all sorry for misspell you name, second of all thanks for answering to my question it is so nice of you! I am so glad that Oberlin got great math dep. Also so excited about Muslim association, and they also have a Kosher-Halal eating co-op! You got great SAT scores congrats. I am so jealous. Are u int student? Do they student from Uzbekistan ? The reason why I am asking strange questions is because I really like Oberlin, and it is my dream school. I am planing for ED, what do u think ? I am very nervous! I want to know everything about admission. Is it true that they look not only at test scores but also you presonl. and talent?
Just one more question if it is alright, i do paint well and have some painting. Should I send they when I apply, even though i am planing to major on math and science ?
Thank you so much !!!

No offence whatsoever, but Wonder, how good is your english or are you just efficiently typing?

Because if you talk with that kind of english in the application i think it will stint your chances : /

-Oh yeah, and TOCF, are there any international applicants you know of recieving full aid?

Hey Lynchian, my English is ok i guess :)??, my toelf is 100 ibt. I understand that my English is not great as yours or others, but I have been studying English for 6 years at public school. moreover I was typing that message on my phone,.... obviously I will not use that kind of language during app., but anyways thank you so much for advice any advise is helpful.
take care

Which is better
Brandeis University or Oberlin College?

Neither is "better." They're both great schools, but quite different. The question you should be asking is which is the better fit for your interests and priorities.

WonderOnly1, I'm obviously not TheOneCurlyFry, but I'm currently working on an Oberlin application, so I can try to answer some of your questions about admissions...

If Oberlin is your dream school, applying ED is a great choice. (That's what I'm doing, for the record :)) One thing to think about, though, is that ED is binding, so if you need financial aid, it's best to apply regular decision so you can compare offers from other schools. I don't know much about financial aid for international students, but I've heard it's difficult to get, so it would be especially important for you to shop around for the best package.

Because Oberlin is small and is trying to build a unique community, they want to accept students who are interesting, passionate, and diverse - not just people with perfect grades and test scores. So in addition to your grades and test scores, they also want to see what kinds of things you do outside school, and they ask for essays and teacher recommendations so they can get an idea of who you really are as a person.

It's a great idea to send copies of some of your paintings, even if you want to major in math or the sciences; it shows that you're a well-rounded person with talent outside your major. You should check out the Common App arts supplement to see how to submit your artwork.

Good luck!

Just some advice guys, don't worry about whether or not you can get into any given school- be concerned with whether or not a school is a good fit for you. Obviously being accepted is necessary, but being happy at the school is by far the most important thing to think about.
