Hello all:
I’ve been considering the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, and the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee for quite some time now, but after six months of thinking where I would like to go, I still can not make a decision.
If anyone if familiar with UW schools or just would like to give me general advice on how to decide between a college, I would greatly appreciate it.
I’ve already made a pros and cons list, and even after that, I still can not make a decision.
Thank you.
Have you already been accepted by both of them?
You need to flip a coin, make a choice, and move on with your life.
Alternately, ask yourself if this dithering just really means that you need a gap year before commiting to college study. That is entirely OK too.
uh, you were SUPPOSED to decide WHICH college you wanted to go to by May 1.That was the date you were supposed to notify the colleges you were accepted at of your enrollment decision.
you had better see if either college STILL has a spot open for you. It may be too late to enroll now.
After you do what @menloparkmom said, and if the answer is yes, both still have spots open for you, can you say here what your areas of interest are?
From what I can tell, both schools have a rolling type of admission without a hard May 1 accept date so please be kind to the OP.
Even though the schools are part of the UW system, they appear pretty different in some respects. UWM is much larger. That means it has more choice in majors, and areas of study. UWW is a bit more suburban, and has a midsize campus of 12k students. Is one closer to home where you could/would commute? Does each campus offer the major you are interested in? Does the larger size of UWM feel daunting?
There are schools out there which don’t have a May 1 deadline. UWM’s priority application deadline for fall 2018 was March 1, and it has rolling admission.
Make a spreadsheet or list with the pros and cons of each school in various categories. See if there is a clear leader. If not, which location do you prefer?
If costs are similar it may help to compare majors you’re interested in. When my son was applying to SUNY schools, that’s one of the ways he compared campuses. If one offers a greater number of courses in your area of interest, or more interesting classes, that might help you choose. I think making a spreadsheet for different criteria that matter to.you is a great idea too.
I would not call Whitewater suburban. (That would require an “urban” for it to be “sub” to, and there isn’t one.) Its business school is supposed to be good. The city is relatively safe but somewhat dull and not very diverse. Milwaukee has a higher crime rate, mainly because it’s a large city, but the crime tends to be localized in certain neighborhoods. There’s a lot to do in Milwaukee and it’s very diverse.
But Milwaukee is cooler by far. It has a larger group of different sorts of people with different perspectives. OP can learn from the differen perspectives. S/he can develop better problem-solving skills. On the whole I personally feel that Milwaukee is the better choice. Milwaukee city also has a distinct personality and chutzpah. I think Milwaukee is a great plan.
I agree, @Dustyfeathers! Let’s just say, Whitewater is perfect for my almost-90-year-old mom and Milwaukee is perfect for my middle-aged sister, and my sister leads a much more interesting life.
Milwaukee is a very cool city, would be a great place to go to college, if UW Milwaukee offers the programs the OP is interested in, and it is affordable.
UWM is really a great school, lots of undergrad support. Cool city, too. If you’re looking to stretch your wings a bit, I would say go for it. It kind of falls under the shadow of UW-Madison but it’s truly an underrated school.
