I've come into a situation where I cannot afford my tuition for next semester. Least year, I was able to waive my school's health insurance because I had MassHealth(Medicaid). However, the beginning of this year, I had to buy the school's insurance because I lost MassHealth (which I have now regained). I'm stuck now because the waiver deadline had long passed but I no longer need the school's insurance which I really cannot afford.

Is there any way that I can get myself out of this mess? Would calling the school and being persistent and stressing the fact that I do not need/cannot afford the insurance help in any way?

I’ve looked online and all pages have stressed that if you do not waive the insurance by the deadline, you will need to pay for the insurance for the entire academic year.

I just dont know how effective asking on the phone is.

The insurance is around $2700 in total for both semesters. I’ve only taken out one loan but I would really like to avoid any more if possible.

If you haven’t taken out your direct loan for this year, an extra $2700 is honestly no big deal. Would you rather take out a very small loan or not enroll?

You could always work some extra hours to pay off that loan throughout the year.

Or you pick up another job in the summer, you could private tutor or babysit, etc, etc there are ways.

Or you just bite the bullet and get a very small loan that you pay with future income. Seems more appealing than the alternative of taking a semester off.

I don’t know whether this would work, but can you withdraw for the semester, drop the insurance and then re register this time with the proof on insurance.?
