So I gave the GRE general today. Infact I just got back home an hour ago. I'm shocked, disappointed, disheartened.. I cant believe I got 680V 690Q when I had been scoring 710-730V and 750-790Q in practice tests!! I think I got really really unlucky.. I got alot of really difficult questions based on counting and probability.

I think I did well on the AWA section.. The verbal score is also good.. but the quant has me down in the dumps!!

Please tell me what I should do now.. should I contemplate giving it again? Which universities will accept my current score for biological sciences programs?

I would really appreciate if if you guys could tell me cuz I just cant think right now!! This was so unexpected.. :( :( :(

My powerprep results were very similar to my actual results, though, yes, a bit higher on Q. Princeton Review has an online practice test that scored lower than my results, maybe that is why I just averaged them out and was not suprised by what I got.

Well you blew my score out of the water (600v, 660q)

Like you, I was also scoring much higher in practice. Plus, I studied for over a month. My biggest problem was that I got the second question wrong.

You can take it again Nov. 1. That's when I'm retaking it.

I wouldn't worry, your score is solid and GRE is only one part (probably the most minor part) of the application, hows your research? I definitely think a strong research will carry you far.

yeah.. 1370 isnt bad.. but its not at all what I'd expected.. How on earth could the actual thing be tougher than ANY practice test I gave?!!?!

I cant give it on Nov1 tx2000!! I hv to give my subject test on 8th Nov. But I sure as hell will give it again around 20th Nov. I'm not going to let this stupid test fool around with my score like this when I know I can do much better.

But I still want to know which Universities will accept scores like mine? I've designated schools like UWash seattle, UMich Ann arbor, Emory and Columbia. I will be applying to Northwestern, Georgia Tech n others as well. Any suggestions for schools I would get into with these scores??

PhD Bound- I hv a full year of research experience from my research MSc at Edinburgh University. 4 months on Drosophila cell cycle with some very good results (ack in paper) and 8 months of work at Instt of Stem Cell Research Edinburgh (this yielded a few interesting results). Plus one summer internship at JNU in Delhi. My UG degree was Biochem from Delhi Univ. How does that go with my scores n where should I apply?

bio2009 the research looks fine, whats your GPA? How are your letters? Assuming you are an international student, of the schools you've listed, check out their international acceptance rate. What I can tell you is:

UWash seattle
UMich Ann arbor
Emory (international friendly)
Columbia (international friendly)
Northwestern (international friendly)
Georgia Tech (for biomedical science?)

I'd suggest checking out some of the research institutes like MD Anderson and Sloan-Kettering (which is relatively new, hence less number of applicants).

you seem awfully worked up over very decent scores. you're quant may be lower than average for some of the programs you are applying, but I assure you that your verbal is much higher. plus, like was mentioned above, GRE are only a part of your application and most departments don't place that much weight on them. unless your GPA is awful I really think you're okay

The verbal score is good and I don't think bio programs are going to scrutinize your quant score, especially given that you have some good research experience.

I think people tend to put too much weight on the GRE. It's easily the least important aspect of your application and having strong research, GPA, letters, etc. will more than make up for a (decent) GRE score.

holy smokes... I'd kill for those scores. You got difficult questions because you were doing SO WELL! Be glad for that!!!!

Sheesh, relax. If you're not confident about your GRE and November 20th IS a little late (you might be wasting $140), you might as well take the year off.

Maybe you should look at the percentile achieved instead of the actual raw scores. Some tests may be harder and score you really low, but in the end, I think it's the percentile that the schools look at. However, I do know for a fact that there are a huge group of test-takers (mainly from China) that make it a point and achieve nothing less than a perfect 800 on the quantitative......

I took it about 2 yrs ago and scored 680V 790Q, but achieved 95th percentile on V while only 88th percentile on Q, despite the higher score on quantitative.

I noticed that about my scores too. I got a 780 on the quantitative section which put me at 90%. It makes sense that there is a contingent of people accounting for the 10% of test takers that scored correctly on the one or two questions that I missed.

hmm.. well u guys seem more confident about my scores than i am!! guess u know more about what the accepted kind of scores are.. now i'm in two minds.. I'll do some pondering n then decide.. but thanks for all ur encouraging comments.. Do suggest some universities if u could which have good bio programs and where I would be able to get into..
