Ok....so I know I am ELIGIBLE to apply but....I have not heard of anyone being accepted into a csu, much less a UC without retaking a class in which they scored a D in.

Junior year was not my year. I had issues at home which became a factor in why I ended up getting a D both semesters of pre-ap pre-calculus.

I tried my hardest to be able to retake it this year but I can't. At my school, pre-AP pre-calculus is only offered one period and the period would conflict with my AP Spanish period..and I need two years of a foreign language to complete my a-g requirements so my counselor told me I had no other choice than to take AP Spanish and settle for AP Statistics for my math class.

Summer school was not an option.

The only available community college class is during school.

In other words, I had the worst of luck....

But other than my pre-calculus class last year, I have had really good grades.

My weighted GPA is at a 4.2 and my unweighted gpa is at a 3.6.

I scored a 2010 on my SAT and am going to study to retake it again in October...

Considering my D and everything else.....do I have a good chance at a CSU or UC?

Or are my chances shot?

..I really want to get into UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside, or Cal Poly.....do I need to aim lower or..?

The CSUs only require 3 years of math. For all but CP SLO, it is really digital - you check the box or not. As long as AP Stat is completes that requirement, you are set. With your grades/scores, you’d be a slam dunk at all of them.

For SLO, it’s more complicated and opaque. I’d call and ask how your grade will impact your admission.

According the the UC website- they too require just 3 years of college prep math. You appear to have met the requirement. They consider the whole applicant, including your ECs and essay. How that ‘recommended 4th’ year weighs is anybody’s guess. I’d say you stand a good chance but, here too, call and ask.

Thank you.

I emailed the UC admission office.

I got the response that I am still eligible so I can still get in and I have a pretty good chance at the lower and mid UCs. Higher UCs such as Berkely are reaches.

I even found out I have 4 years of math because I took Algebra I in middle school which is on my transcript.

So, basically, I have a chance at all of my prospective colleges…now, whether my actually admission will be greatly affected by my unfortunate grade (probably not too greatly since I have other stuff to balance it out) another question. Hopefully not. I’ll have to wait and see. Luckily, the application is not solely focused on grades.

My college counselor, when I talked to her today, even told me I should aim a bit higher for my reaches, despite my D, since I am a first generation latina who wants to be a business major. She said I should even try Cartegie Mellon because one never knows and I am in the range for it.

Note the UC and CSU validation policy where higher level math and foreign language courses can validate lower level courses.

Note that your GPA is calculated as described here:

With that, you can calculate your CSU eligibility index:

Thanks for reporting back. I wasn’t sure if D’s were admissible because of so many reports where students got a D in Spring of Sr year and were rescinded, so don’t get that. Please come back and report your admissions and good luck!
