I can't afford to send my scores!

I paid for the ACT with a fee waiver, 2 of the 3 times I took it. I spoke with ACT and they said they don't waive the fee to send score reports, like SAT does. Three of my schools require that I send ALL scores. What do I do if I can't afford to send three separate score reports, let alone one score report?

Can anyone please help? I have to get my scores in but I don’t know what to do.

I hope you realize that it costs even more to send in your final applications.

^ But many universities will grant application fee waivers

Yah, I got 12 fee waivers, 1 for each school so I don’t have to pay for applications. How do they expect people on free lunch who have unemployed parents to pay to send 3 score reports, paying well over 100 dollars? If I only send one score can I be penalized for not being able to afford it?

^ Keeps the riff raff from being accepted and receiving expensive need-based aid.

excuse me? riff raff? just because my parents don’t make as much as others doesn’t mean I shouldn’t have a fair shot at the schools they do. Anyone who isn’t an ignorant imbecile have a meaningful answer to my question? It’s really important.

Why don’t you contact the schools that require all scores and explain the situation? Ask them if you can just send the best score and self report the others.

The only other suggestion I have is to cut down on the number of schools. It sounds like financial aid will be very important. Be realistice about which options will really work for you. Good luck.

I’m apply to 5 schools due by Nov 1, none of those schools require all scores. So should I just send my highest score to those 5, and then for the 3 RD schools that require all scores, call them and see what to do?

OP - call the college admissions offices and ask if they will accept a photocopy of the score report that your high school rcvd. Your GC can copy each score report and mail them to the college - which won’t cost you a penny. This is not the normal way to do it - but for a student in a situation such as yours - perhaps they will make an exception.

Yes - send the highest score report to the 5 schools. Then call the others that want all scores and see if they will take copies as I outlined above.

Clearly there is no test for ability to pickup sarcasm on the fee wavier forms. I used 15 fee waivers when applying to school.

OP–
talk to your GC at school. Often the counseling office or the principal have a private “discretionary fund” for situations such as yours. For example, our school had one that paid for things like field trips, lab fees/equipment, etc., for those whose families could not afford them.
Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. And many years from now, when you are in a more secure position in the world, pay it back.

bnambs, sorry for not realizing your sarcasm. how did you end up paying to send all your scores? And is it okay if, for the schools that don’t require all scores, I just send my highest ACT seating?

One more question, you guys seem to know your stuff so I figure this is a good place to ask: If I’m taking the SAT Saturday, I did awful the only other time I took the SAT because I was sick and had to leave the room. Obviously, this score is goign to be better than my previous one. Should I blindly send my scores, or wait to see if they are better than my ACT, and then send them? If I wait, will it cost me another 10 dollars to send to every college if I don’t send it with the score reports that I’m sending out today?

Go ahead and send them. The vast majority of colleges are going to use your best scores. Since you are pretty positive that this SAT will be better than your previous SAT - I say send them. When you use a fee waiver for the SAT - you can send 4 free reports, I believe - so use those free reports and send them. But as I said previously - talk to your GC and to the colleges and see if they will accept photocopies directly from your hs to save you money. Your GC should be able to give you contact info for the regional rep that is responsible for your hs. Contact that regional rep - explain your situation - and see if they will accept a copy from the GC. That would save you money and headaches.

I just sent my highest scores, and I had a job in high school so some money went to that.

My son took the SAT with a fee waiver. He ordered 4 score reports to be sent to schools before he took the test. We figured it was worth giving up the ability to view his scores first to not have to pay. (And he tests well.) Later we went to send reports to additional schools and realized he got “4 free because of the fee waiver.” So he ended up getting 8 free this way.

I couldn’t really afford my scores or my app fees and forgot to ask for waivers. Best of luck.

I was in the same exact situation as yourself ^^

When you took the act did you circle any score choices? I was able to send my scores to Rice USC Stanford and Wash U for free via fee waiver

I still needed to send some more scores so i asked my counselor and they waived it
