I can't believe he got in...

^ that’s what i thought; it has been getting more selective over the years

It seems like it has gotten more selective for out of staters then for in-staters. But that’s the case for most public schools.

Python is right, Michigan seems like it has gotten much less selective, at least for in-staters. Basically, at our school, it seems if you apply ER, and you aren’t a complete idiot, you’ll easily get in.

Michigan admissions is very hard to predict, it is very random, but overall the statistics show it has been getting more selective, it seems like last year it was much harder to get in than this year though, last year kids with 31s and 3.7’s didnt get in now it seems like everyone and their mother is getting into Michigan

i think thats rude to saw rammennoodels, especially to the people with higher stats that have been deferred. its evident that everyone and their mother is NOT getting into michigan

maybe he had a friend in admissions, you never know what connections people might have…

Same deal at my school. So far 36 kids at my school have been accepted…NOT INCLUDING ME. Two really dumb girls got accepted, with like 24 and 25 on the act, no sports for both, and like 3.5 uw gpa’s with only a few honors and 1 ap class apiece. i got a 32 on the act, have a decent gpa, have taken 5 ap classes and a boatload of honors classes, and do two sports. There is a theory going around that because three not so smart girls got in, that it was because all three girls had divorced parents… i know it’s not much, but there is a small correlation there and perhaps the university is trying to discriminate in different ways. I don’t really believe it, but i think the admission process is a little wack.

samuelson, is your school in-state or OOS?

Definitely a weird year…I got into Michigan and was deferred by Illinois.

^ He didn’t get in because he was OOS. I’m oos, have high SATs and go to a top private school, and it appears that I was deferred (although I havent gotten my letter yet).

My explanation: He had a monster connection that he didn’t tell you about.

That or mich admissions is on crack.

yeah he definitely had a huge connection

As Amorehyde mentioned above, the art school admissions is not based on the same criteria as LS&A. Same with the theatre program. It takes into account talent, so the numbers game seems like it is just a threshhold for these schools. They don’t want you to fail, so they make sure you can do the academics, but they are not as tough on the ACT and GPA.

“That or mich admissions is on crack.”>>.made my day…

check out last year’s admittance/deferral thread; not only on crack but in need of rehab…

“Definitely a weird year…I got into Michigan and was deferred by Illinois.”

there is also someone on UWisconsin board who was deferred there and accepted to UMich; yes, a strange year indeed…

how can any of you say that a person should not have gotten in? i mean, given his stats it is surprising that he did, but we are all in the same boat this year and cannot resent one another for being successful. he MUST have some kind of a hook that got him accepted. i applaud him for his success.

^^ totally agreed; it’s not that he shouldn’t have gotten in…it’s more how UMich admissions is so bizarre lately…

and, yes, we have no idea who he knows, or what hook he may or may not have…

He seriously doesn’t have any hooks. I’ve asked a thousand times and believe me he is just as shocked as everyone else posting. He didn’t think he was going to get in.

Plus, he had already payed his deposit to Auburn thinking he wasn’t getting into UMich…

I’m not sure what they saw in him, but it most have been something good.

And also, he applied as a political science major if that makes any difference.

Regardless, complaining about his acceptance doesn’t do anything. Tons of under-qualified students get in from my school every year. It happens.

I’m just being bitter :(

I hate how he found out and I’m still waiting (and expecting a deferral)

I know TONS of kids who have gotten in with extremely weak scores who had DIVORCED PARENTS. I saw someone post about that and I really think there’s many cases where Michigan is (don’t take this the wrong way) a “sympathy school,” admitting lots of kids with less than standard test scores (by Michigan’s standards) because of unique living circumstances or other situations such as having ADHD, etc.

This could be wrong, but I have seen many kids with these kinds of situations get in without being comparable to a typical UM acceptee.

^^that’s bizarre…but the only kid last year accepted RD from my D’s class had divorced parents and lower stats than everyone who was deferred ER…spooky

I have a hard time believing the thing about divorced parents. my stats absolutely truck that kids and my parents are divorced. i got deferred.
