I can't decide between two LAC's! HELP.

I am debating between Sarah Lawrence College & Earlham College. I won't get to visit either, and I am not sure if I like a small town or a big city!

I am just so confused because I thought I'd be denied to one at least. Any insights on either?

I want to study Foreign Languages, Literature, and Economics. Or some combination.

Thanks in advance!

Bump,

I know it’s too soon to bump, but I just want to make sure I wake up to responses. Sorry!

Wow. On the face of it, very different places: Earlham comes out of a Quaker tradition; SLC is NYC bohemian. Midwest v. East Coast. Clearly, if money is an issue, Earlham would have the edge, as SLC is known as one the most expensive places in the country. And Earlham would be a fine choice: good school, good education. Beyond money, Earlham is somewhat more structured and traditional in its academics: it has a general education requirement, which SLC does not. Strangely, both offer Japanese but neither offers Chinese. They’re both small, though Earlham is a bit smaller. Seems to me the key criteria for making a decision are: cost; location; and how you react to the gen ed requirement. Good luck…

Is cost a factor? Run the numbers here. It may help with your decision: [FinAid | Calculators | Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Award Letter Requirements - Finaid)

Cost, for the first time, is NOT a factor.
I liked the appeal of a small town, and the midwest is just amazing, but New York…

I would be transferring as a Junior, so I would be behind a few gen eds at Earlham. I just need to talk to someone about how now majors, etc etc works!

I am also concerned that I won’t fit in at one over the other. I am not sure how the student bodies differ.

Also post on the College Search and Selection forum as it gets more traffic and your question is more about the schools than transferring per se.

Those two schools are so different. It would be really good if you could visit.

I know two young women who went to, and transferred from Sarah Lawrence. It’s a very hip, arty school with a very different academic program-- from what I’ve heard, lots of writing and no grades. But very challenging. It’s not in NYC, but close enough for a weekend visit.

Earlham is much more traditional, but has a focus on peace and social activism- from it’s Quaker tradition. The town of Richmond is very depressed, but when my daughter asked about that-- it appears there’s nothing to do in town-- the tour guide said there was so much to do on campus that they never noticed the lack of things to do.

Good luck on your decision.

What will the cost difference be btw the two schools? And, what language are you interested in studying? Earlham is known for their Japanese program, so that would be an advantage to Earlham imo. Isn’t Sarah Lawrence one of the most expensive schools in the country? I think it’s 60K per year…so, I’m leaning towards Earlham unless you have some substantial FA award from SL?
