Hey I'm a senior who lives in Georgia and I am awful at making decisions. Top majors for me are engineering, computer science, or law.
yeah i like to party but my grades mean a lot to me. I havent decided about greek life yet, but i'm not really one of those superficial sort of girls.. love sports.. and i dont like the cold but i guess i can deal if i have to.
UGA- a lot of my friends are going
Georgia Tech- great school for what i'm looking at and i am liking the guy to girl ratio haha but i dont want the rigor to stress me out too much
Clemson- great school and i love the campus but i only know one person there and dont know of anyone else going so scares me a bit
Northeastern- great school, but far

I dont know! ha so any information or opinions would help no matter what they are.

Don’t attend college to stay with the same old friends, I would recommend a school like Clemson for you because its not too far and you seem to like it. You’ll make new friends don’t attend a college due to a fear of losing friends. Not to mention Clemson’s football team is not bad either.

Do you qualify for HOPE scholarship in your state (Georgia)? If so, will your parents pay for an OOS school like Clemson, which has a HIGH OOS cost?

Your parents may be expecting you to take the cost benefit of HOPE because their remaining cost is quite low (maybe $15k per year). If you go to Clemson, they will be paying $40k+ per year. They may be willing, they may not be. Have you asked them?

If your parents have said that they will pay all costs then go for it…go where you like!!! :)

Why do you have to decide now? Why not apply to those schools…and maybe a couple of others that will give you large merit…and then decide next Spring?

Congrats on qualifying for Zell Miller. I think that gives you free tuition for UGA and GT. The remaining costs would be about $15k…not bad at all.

Congrats on the $10k from Clemson. The remaining costs would be about $35k. I don’t think Clemson is worth that much more money per year. It’s a nice school, but paying an extra $80k seems like a waste of money…especially if you have any graduate school, law school or med school costs ahead of you.

Are you SURE your parents are fine with spending an EXTRA $80k for Clemson that they wouldn’t be paying at GT or UGA??? Your parents may not realize how unusually high Clemson’s OOS tuition is.

I’d look at return on investment. You should definitely, definitely stay in-state at UGA or Georgia Tech. Both are superb schools. If you’re leaning towards engineering/computer science, Georgia Tech takes the cake. If law… Georgia law is a top 30 law school. You also live in a state dominate by Georgia alums politically, economically and judicially… may not hurt. However, you can do your pre-law work equally well at Georgia Tech. I’d recommend majoring in something challenging. It’ll give you a leg up over all the history and political science majors in law schools and during your LSAT. If I were you I’d major in environmental or biological engineering, economics or maybe even public policy.

yeah i’ve been researching and I think instate is my best bet… waiting for techs admission decision though! and yeah my major will most likely be some sort of engineering or computer science.

If you are doing engineering and want to save money by staying in-state, I’d go to Georgia Tech over Georgia. I like Georgia more than Georgia Tech but you are going to college to get an education and for engineering there is no better choice than Georgia Tech (not only in Georgia but in the US).

I’m currently a civil engineering student at Clemson and I love it there! You may not know anybody there but I didn’t know anyone either when I showed up 5 years ago and it’s forced me out of my comfort zone and make my own friends/meet all kinds of people rather than just stick around with the same people I’ve known for years. I wouldn’t be worried about that aspect if you decide to go to Clemson. If you have any questions about Clemson or our engineering/science program, let me know!

Sure, Georgia Tech is better for engineering - but you don’t seem 100% sure that you want to do engineering. UGA gives you the flexibility to change your major and explore a lot of options, plus it seems to have more of the social scene that you want - especially with partying and big sports. Tech has sports, but UGA has Sports. College is about education, yes, but it is also about having fun and discovering yourself. I also think that there is nothing wrong with going to college where you know people. My sister goes to Georgia Gwinnett, and one of the things that has kept her doing well and motivated is being close to all the friends she knew from high school - she’s made new friends, of course, but also held onto lifelong friendships. Plus UGA is such a big school that you can keep your HS friends AND make new friends if you want.

Also, I am personally not Greek but I have a lot of friends that are, and being Greek doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re superficial. I will say that being an SEC school, though, joining a sorority at UGA could be quite an ordeal.

Tech and Northeastern are the top academic schools on your list. Tech is a great engineering school in Georgia and will provide a good academic environment. If you want to eventually work at a top company in New York or Boston, Northeastern will provide the best employment prospects due to its ties in the corporate world.

Ultimately, you should visit each school and see which city you would rather live in for four years.

UGA and Clemson are pretty mediocre academically, but UGA may be cheap for you if you can’t afford a more elite school.

“UGA and Clemson are pretty mediocre academically”

Yeah #60 and #62 ranked national universities are pretty mediocre. (PS: If you like college athletics, Northeastern is not the place to go lol) Especially considering that 4 years ago Northeastern was ranked in the 90s

Thankyou everyone for all of the information! I’ve been accepted everywhere except for tech, i should find out before december though. I have a lot to think about i guess.
