I can't take the wait, will someone please chance me?

Hi! I'm applying to the architecture program at SU. It is my top choice school, but I am also applying to Pratt Institute and Drexel University. Based on my stats, do you think I could get in to any of those schools?

GPA: 4.0 (unweighted)
Rank: 1 of 248 (but, about 10 other kids in my school are ranked this way, too)
SAT: 590 reading, 590 writing, 760 math
Classes: total of 20 honors/AP courses ranging from biology to physics to art to calculus
Activities: Foodbank volunteer, part time job at movie theater since 04/2010, marching band 3 years(drumline section leader 1 year), stage crew 4 years(stage manager 2 years), Girl Scouts 10 years(bronze and silver awards), piano playing since fourth grade, National Honors Society, National Art Honor Society
Essay: I feel as if my essay was mediocre leaning on the better side. Not the best, but certainly not the worst, either.
Recommendation Letters: 1 crappy letter (mandatory from Guidance Counselor), 1 okay letter, and one golden letter from gifted teacher that makes me embarrassed.
Portfolio: Here's a [url=<a href="http://imgur.com/a/7vT1C%5Dlink%5B/url">http://imgur.com/a/7vT1C]link[/url</a>] to a number of my best portfolio pieces. I had 15 in total. The ones I have shown here are mainly done with acrylic paint. In my entire portfolio, I also submitted photography, a few good-quality sketches, and watercolor drawings.

I won't find out from Syracuse & Pratt until March/April and I won't hear from Drexel for at least a month. This wait is going to be hilariously stressful. Good luck to everyone else!

pretty cool portfolio. Really like the tree one, very creative ! I too have applied to Syracuse and the wait is very nerve wracking. Good luck and hope you get accepted !

I know! We still have two more months and I swear I might lose my mind by then. Good luck to you, too!

I enjoyed this one: http://i.imgur.com/4Kk9qh.jpg</a></p>

We should make a Syracuse RD thread. Every other university has one…

And I don’t see why you wouldn’t get in. You look like a great candidate and your portfolio is very interesting and unique.

Just started up the Syracuse RD thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/syracuse-university/1286194-syracuse-university-class-2016-regular-decision-thread.html</a></p>

On topic, your portfolio is pretty solid quality-wise from what I can see. From what I learned in visiting SOA this past summer, they really look for students who show that they are passionate for Architecture. They are not just looking for applicants who are virtuoso artists, but those who truly show they love architecture and its function in society. I am not saying that you aren’t passionate, I just can’t exactly tell from your portfolio how much you are. I know that admissions for RD is more competitive because they don’t review you as an individual, so I hope you really took advantage of that opening statement for the portfolio.

Nonetheless, it’s hard to say if you have a “good” chance. Though you do look like a well-rounded person so I wish you the best!

Thanks for your feedback. If you don’t mind, would you read my opening statement if I PMed it to you?
I also visited SOA this past summer. The woman who spoke with me there told me that they were looking for kids with passion for art in general and interests in functionality and structure. Why must officials tell us different things?! :(

Yeah, sure. Go ahead and send a PM.

And yeah, I don’t know. Did you speak with Vittoria?

WIZARDLY, do you take traditional art classes? I’m assuming so, since you said you had a broad range of medium in your portfolio. However, did you only send the six you uploaded? Clarification please. From what you did upload, I can say they are nice, but, not over the top excellent that many Pratt applicants exhibit (applicants with numerous scholastic gold keys, prestigious art/architecture programs, state-wide recognition etc.) Syracuse applicants are similar as well- and the school of arch there stresses artistic ability in deciding admittance.

But I must say, you have good stats overall (rank and extracurriculars, SAT is okay) which will help you in gaining admittance.

First of all, thanks for your feedback.

Yes, I have taken traditional art classes. I took Drawing I, Drawing II, and Advanced Art Portfolio. I did not get involved with the arts until my Junior year, when I was accidentally placed in a drawing class. However, I made the best out of the situation and soon fell in love with visual arts. In my essays and opening statement, I address this situation. I had 15 pieces in total, but those 6 were my most creative and the ones I am most proud of. I also submitted a few photography pieces, high quality and detailed sketches, and other assorted pieces. I know that the portfolio is often times the most important part of an architectural application and I am quite nervous about how the admissions office will feel about my pieces!

Also, Pratt informed me that architecture majors with a GPA above 3.7 need not submit an art portfolio. Therefore, I am wondering how strictly they will judge my work. I figured that it couldn’t hurt to send it, despite my 4.0 GPA. Any ideas on this?

Well, you definitely have an edge grade-wise.
I got into SU with a much lower grade haha. I think my high school GPA average was a 3.33 (unweighted).
Your portfolio looks pretty good.
The drawing of the tree man is pretty cool but I thought it would be much better if it was drawn with more attention on details like the drawing of the street light.
I think you have a good chance of getting into SU, but I think SU requires more than 10 pieces of artwork in the portfolio though.

@Kendezi

I submitted 15 pieces in total.

Thanks for your feedback!

No problem :)
