I caught somebody cheating on the SAT

Long story short, the guy that sat next to me this morning was cheating....he deliberately made sure the proctor wasn't looking and then filled in unanswered sections from another test. What is infuriating is that ANOTHER STUDENT sitting next to Mr. Cheater saw this same guy cheating, gave him a thumbs up and laughed about how "smart" he was, and then declined to report it. Not only did this student cheat once, but TWICE during the test. I am quite sure half of the students saw him cheating (he made it VERY obvious and snickered to the other test takers who looked up and saw him), but nobody did anything about it. I heard him bragging before the test about how he "didn't study" and "failed the last SAT." It is NOT fair to other students like me who have studied their butts off for the test for him to cheat like that. Anyways, I reported him to the proctor. I'm glad I did, but now I'm worried....will my scores be delayed if CollegeBoard does an investigation? I heard that they may cancel everybody's scores if they suspect more were cheating. I have early decision applications that are due soon and I can't afford to have my scores come in late.
HELP! :(

What he gets on the test has 0 effect on what you get. He gets a 2400? Awesome. You will never see him again, and his 2400 didn’t make your score any less good. However, you chose to report him. Guess what? Now you’re sweating about some problem you created yourself.

You turned the situation from one that had 0 effect on you to one that could potentially affect you, simply because you wanted to play the long arm of the law.

Good one?

You are correct. There is real a chance the scores of everyone in the room will be cancelled. It has happened before.

Should I have just kept quiet? I’m beginning to think I should have…I really hope the entire class’s scores aren’t jeopardized because of this.

I know the feeling you get when that kid cheats. Everyone is in on it but the proctor. I’m proud that there are still people who stand up to this bs. You definitely SHOULD have, but hopefully your scores will not be rescinded. Don’t worry about it. There’s nothing you can do now but advocate for yourself and tell the truth. Good luck. P.S. Fingers crossed we all did well today! (Without any unfair advantages of course!)

Thank you @icepierre. Good luck to you as well, and I hope you reach your goal!
@Kyuutoryuu This is not about his score or mine. This is about academic honesty and integrity on one of the most important tests you will ever take as a high schooler. How is it fair to the millions that do take the SAT honestly? I chose to report him because what he was doing was wrong. You are entitled to your opinion and I respect that, but I acted based on my conscience, and not out of spite. If you took the SAT this morning, good luck to you. I hope you do well :)

I would have ignored it but I guess snickering and being obvious was just asking for trouble. Just accept that you stopped someone’s cheating, and though it may compromise your grade ( unlikely though ) it was your choice, and it cannot be retracted so if you cannot be positive about it, don’t let it get you down

It’s kind of late to be worrying about it. What’s done is done. Don’t think about it anymore.
You can always send an e mail to Collegeboard and ask them the usual procedures in such cases.

Well, congratulations! You’ve made a rod for your own back! I wouldn’t report anything if I were you,

You stood up for what you believed in. As you can see by these comments, not many people have the courage to do what you did.

I agree with QuadMaster. Don’t let anyone tell you what you did was wrong. Your scores have a decent chance of being cancelled, but letting someone get away with cheating is far worse. It doesn’t just affect you; it affects everyone taking the SAT. And although one cheater won’t dramatically impact the credibility of the test, this would be happening many times more without your commitment to the integretity of the test. You did the right thing!

Also, I’d contact the ED college and explain the situation. I think they will appreciate you for your honesty. Try to sign up for the November test if you haven’t done so already. I’m sure this college will try to accomodate your unique situation.

There was another thread similar to this one a few years ago…it’s sad how many people on this forum would rather not report it and protect their own interests instead of doing the right thing. Call me old-fashioned, legalistic, moralistic, whatever - but I’m not going to argue about why I think cheating is wrong. If you would rather let it go just so your scores are “safe,” that’s your choice. Maybe I did bring this on myself, but you know what? At least I have peace of mind knowing I did the right thing. I didn’t start this thread to ask if I should have reported the cheating or not, I just wanted to know if the entire class’s scores would be cancelled. Thanks to those of you who answered the original question, I guess there’s nothing I can do now but wait and see what happens.

Agree 100% with @Kyuutoryuu

Why in the world would you worry about the other?

@BedfordTiger‌ - As is often quoted: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing”. While cheating on the SAT might not be evil per se, ethics are ethics. IMO it is shameful to be a meek bystander while others break important rules.

So this is interesting…will the scores of everyone in the room be canceled and their test efforts deleted? If so, wow, that is actually a very big deterrent to turning in anyone.

i hope everyone’s score will not be cancelled lol. Because if not, i’m sure there are going to be some infuriated people come and find you…
Good luck lol

I agree with fallenchemist. You stood up for what is right.

It would be far worse for the other kid to be caught in some other way and some assumption made that you were part of this, then go through the mess of defending yourself.

You did the right thing. It may be aggravating, yes. This is the sort of thing you may want to talk to your GC about in case your scores are withheld. Get his/her advice.

Funny how some of the answers seem to be lining up hs kids vs adults.
