:) ... :( ... :) ... :( (I Chance Back) Penn + others

So yeah...in case you didnt get the title, i fluctuate a lot on how i view my admissions chances. Sometimes I am super confidant, sometimes I am totally depressed. I think I'm a good applicant, but I fear that 90+% of applicants to my list of schools will be just as "qualified" and only 10-20% can be accepted.

Penn (ED deferred, applied to the college) I fell victim to falling in love with this school, I absolutely love everything about it

In order of preference:
Stanford
Wash U
Rice
Chicago
Columbia
+Safeties (no need to chance :))

Basically I want to know whether you think I will get into at least some (1 or 2+) of my list. So here are my stats...

GPA (3.96UW/4.55W)
SAT only took it once 2320 (800M 740R 780W)
SAT II (800 Math I and II, 790 Chem)
AP (5s -- physics, calc AB and BC, euro, APUSH, chem)

Snr Schedule:
AP Bio
AP Computer Science
Linear Alg/Multivariable Calc
Research Science class
AP English Language
AP Art History

College classes -- just took an econ course at community college

Um...Extra Curriculars (average, I would say but i tie them all together really really well in my essays :)

Photography (contests, displayed, published in school magazine, taught youth photo class, interned at local organization that brings the arts to underserved neighborhoods, assisted/studied under professional photographer, director of photography at church Vaccation Bible School)
Literary Magazine (Co Snr editor, my cover design won first place 2 years ago)
Math Teams (ARML, NYCIML captain, AMC, AIME, Math League etc...)
Science (Co founder of Rocketry Club, TARC team member, working on research atm)
Sports (Golf 4 letters, Squash)
Economics (when school cut econ dept I co founded econ lecture series at my school, president of econ club, co founder of student run fund, interned at coalition of oil companies, worked at a local fund)
Volunteer (Habitat for Humanity, Local Food Bank, Church (photography stuff), Aviary)

So that is probably more than you ever wanted to know...
My essays were good, Penn was the best by far
Recs were great, English teacher talked about how I was a leader in the class, Chem teacher talked about my curiosity and my current research project which he is supervising.

Thanks, and btw Ill chance back

Really good stats and ECs. I think you stand a good chance at Wash U, Rice, and UChicago, whereas Columbia is a reach. Stanford is always a crapshoot, but your stats make you a very competitive applicant. Didn’t have time to look this up from your profile, but if you’re a URM this boosts up your chances, and if you’re not then just know that there are others with similar stats as you–so you have to find some other way to stand out.

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1087407-chance-me-berkeley-stanford-ivies-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

You have a very impressive resume. I have to agree with LovelyBones; you’re practically in at Washington U, Rice, a match at UChicago, while Columbia and Stanford are always just a guess. But, given your stats, I think you have as good a chance as any potential accepted applicant has.
Chance me:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1087095-chances.html</a></p>

haha no URM here, white kid kind of Northeast…no one has commented on Penn, I would assume that its the same as Columbia.

I’m surprised you got deferred from Penn - I applied there RD with slightly worse stats. Anyways - I think if you’ve sent updates to Penn and have great midyear grades, you should get in - good luck!

In/Low Match: Washington U, Rice, U Chicago
Mid Reach: Stanford
High Reach: Columbia

Ivies and Stanford are gonna be hard though, considering they are always a guess.

Chance me?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1072869-what-do-you-think-my-chances-5.html</a></p>

bump…maybe a few more responses?

i don’t know how you didn’t get into Penn ED. anyhow, i think you will for sure get in RD. they probably just had too many outstanding applicants like you (or a lot of legacies) and they needed to wait to accept you in the bigger pool. i still don’t get how you got deferred.

hehe  thanks for the votes of confidence. I know why i was deferred ED. It is really simple, I come from a VERY overrepresented area at Penn. So…thanks again, everyone. If anyone has any last minute chances, feel free. :)

I’m sorry you got deferred from Penn, it’s definitely the school’s loss and a testament to the randomness of the application process. That being said, there are still things you can do to get in RD.

Overall I think you have a very strong application and a good chance at all those schools. But as you’ve no doubt discovered, the admissions process is very competitive and seemingly arbitrary
