Self explanatory. What other schools were you accepted into that you turned down to enroll in Wake? If you'd like, you could provide a brief explanation why.

You could also say: I am deciding between Wake and ____.
or
I chose __ over Wake because...

I just want to find out other schools Wake competes with and how they size up.

DS chose Wake over Michigan and William & Mary. Thought Michigan was too big and too cold, although he did like the sports mgmt program. Also thought highly of William & Mary, but thought Wake Forest was better for a sports fan. No regrets.

I chose Wake Forest over … NYU, GWU, UMiami (with money), Penn State - University Park, UMaryland (with money), & Rutgers (Arts & Science, Business). I also removed myself from the Lehigh wait list when I got my Wake acceptance.

I wanted a medium-sized school (in my opinion, Wake is medium sized – I also saw Swarthmore & NYU). Wake has great weather (like Miami) but is more serious about academics. Although I love NYC, NYU’s lack of campus eventually was the deal breaker there (it came down to Wake & NYU).

I applied to other schools, as well. I was denied from UVA & BC (random) but I would have gone to Wake over those two anyway. I was wait listed at Tufts & Vandy, but I would have gone to Wake over Tufts. It would have been harder to choose between Wake & Vandy, but I would have probably chose Wake because I’ve never seen Vandy.

I was denied from Cornell (ED), Georgetown, & Duke. Those were more heartbreaking but I’m sort of glad it happened that way. Cornell and Georgetown were my top two. I still love both of them. My school sends kids to both every year so it was easy to see why I didn’t get it (2370, 3.99 kids).

In the end, it worked out reasonably well for me. Who knows – I might have hated one of the top schools I applied to. Or I might’ve loved it. We’ll never really know. I’m glad I reasoned through it that way, though.

D chose WF over Fordham business, Santa Clara business, U of Or and a couple of real safeties. She was denied at Colgate and Duke, which in the end she is happy about as she felt very at home on her WF visit.

I chose wake (with money) over UNC-chapel hill (with money), BC (with money) , Upitt (full ride), umaryland (honors with money), penn state, uconn(honors with money), elon(with money), and virginia tech (with money)

this is because out of all 9, wake, chapel hill, bc, and pitt were the most reasonable to go to (b/c of academics and money) - so that narrows it down

from there, bc was too close to home (i live in CT). so that came off my list

i wanted a more campus-y feel and didn’t want to live in a city so i gave up the full ride to upitt (parents were mad)

and between UNC and wake, i wanted more of a personal feel with knowing professors and other students instead of being a number. i visited wake, but i didn’t visit UNC since i didn’t think id get in since im oos (bad idea). so wake won me over with its campus. also a kid from my school is already going to UNC so i kinda didn’t want to go with another kid from my school. plus i was guaranteed a ticket to every basketball game while at UNC its a lottery system, so i chose wake over UNC. =]

Of all of the campuses I visited last summer, WF stood out (along with WashU and UMd) as being one of the friendliest. I was impressed how a professor in the Arts building dropped what he was doing just to give me a quick personal tour of the complex … we ate at a campus restaurant and I loved how the waitress dissed Duke. I interpreted that to be great school spirit … in the end, given my financial realities, I had to follow the $$ and decline Wake.

Much as we all loved Wake, my son got waitlisted and is still up in the air on whether he will accept a spot on it or not. He was admitted to Villanova School of Business, so that is where he will most likely matriculate. Wake had originally been his first choice for many reasons, more than I could list here, but he believes his chances of getting in from the wait list are slim and he really wants to finalize his decision now.

One thing that impressed us about Wake was the genuine friendliness of all the people, even in Winston Salem, where we stayed overnight. We loved the size of the campus; small enough to be more than just a number, but still large enough to provide variety across the spectrum.

I would also like to add that the posters on this site have been more helpful and accessible to prospective students than on any other site.

Wake Forest is a special place, no doubt about that. Good luck to next year’s Demon Deacons.

Kelly- tell S not to feel bad, D was waitlisted at Villanova business and accepted at Wake Forest. She is very happy, just a little nervous about having to go through the admission process again jr year to get into the business school.

Son chose WFU over Maryland, Dickinson, Gettysburg, Elon, Lafayette (WL), Richmond (WL), and a couple nice safeties.

He will be in Army ROTC so it was important for the batallion to be located on campus. That ruled out Gettysburg & Elon. Maryland was never really in the running (too big). Dickinson was the only other acceptance that met all the criteria.

Despite the ROTC factor, Wake was always #1 for him.

merryecho - thanks, and the same to your daughter. My son wanted to attend school in the south and he loved the Wake school spirit (and sports!). Admissions process can be perplexing, but things usually end up working out just fine and soon the kids can’t imagine themselves at any other school but the one they are attending.

Kelly37 - If your son truly loves Wake, he should accept a spot! He can always take his name off after a month or so if he finalizes his plans to go to Nova. I think Wake takes a decent number of wait listed kids every year, so if he wants to come here, he should accept the spot ASAP & write a letter!

Good luck, no matter what he decides. Nova is awesome, too :)

Thanks Pinkcupcake, I don’t know much about the wait list process and whether they are really used, or if they are more of a gentler form of rejection…but now I am going to suggest to him that he take the spot :)

No problem I know people who have gotten in off of the wait list. Most of them sent in a letter saying that they really wanted to come to Wake / would come if accepted / love the school / etc. One of my good friends from home got in off of the wait list a week after accepting her spot.

I don’t want to give you false hope and I know that a lot of wait list kids do not end up getting in, but some definitely do so a wait list isn’t a death sentence at Wake.

Kelly37 - I work at a private high school. Last year - we had 3 students WL at Wake and 2 came off the WL - they received calls in early May from our regional rep. I have no idea about this year - I am just providing this info as an anecdote. Do have your son send your regional rep a letter of interest - update him/her on what he has accomplished since applying to Wake in the fall - awards - honors - more grades, etc. Have his GC call and advocate for him as well. Work it - without being too pushy. Good luck.

Thank you everybody for your advice and suggestions. What a great community at Wake. No wonder everybody seemed so happy when we visited the campus…the kindness must be contagious.

I am deciding between Wake and Notre Dame. & I can’t decide for anything! I loved Wake the two times I’ve been there, location and weather are perfect, and I love that it’s in the ACC, but I don’t know if I can pass up on Notre Dame’s amazing reputation, network and tradition.

In my opinion, Wake has just as good of a reputation as Notre Dame does, and an even better reputation than ND does in the southern states. Wake also has a good network.

If it helps, I didn’t apply to ND because of the dorm situation (apparently boys can’t be in girls dorms after 11/midnight/something?) which I just really didn’t like at all. Sometimes late at night a bunch of girls sit in the boys lounge and we all just hang out or do homework or whatever, and I didn’t like ND’s policy on that. I’m not sure of the exact policy but that’s sort of what I recollect.

I chose Wake over Furman University and the University of Florida. Furman was too strict and small, and UF can’t compete with Wake’s class sizes and academics. Plus Wake has the prettiest college campus of any I’ve seen, and I’ve toured quite a few. GO DEACS! :)
