I dare you to chance me

because no one did before...

There are some differences between my application then and now. I'm only applying regular decision, (although it paid off in terms of grades) and I have submitted another SATII.

SAT II: 800 World History, 790 Literature, 620 Chemistry
SAT: 800 M, 800 CR, 800 W
APs: US History 5
World History 5
Art History 5

Small private HS (sends many grads to top schools), white, male.

ECs: Editor-in-Chief and founder of a new school magazine (non-fiction, reviews, humor, puzzles, etc)
Editor-in-Chief of the school's literary magazine
Attended writer camp at University of Iowa (with 25% acceptance rate, had to submit ten pages)
Track (Outdoor and Indoor) for ~ 3 years (two years varsity in each, although I didn't accomplish much.)
Exchange to Germany the summer after sophomore year

Community Service: I'm a Peer Leader this year, volunteered for about one hundred hours my sophomore year at several organizations.

Awards:
National Merit Semifinalist
Scholarship for that exchange
My application will include a recommendation from my artistic mentor at school, who ran the aforementioned literary magazine and helped me found another publication, as well as the second issue of that publication and a short story that I wrote.

My college counselor also stated that my main common app essay is one of the best that she's seen in years. (I mention this because the idea that I am a strong writer is especially central to my app)

Three rec's (German teacher since 7th grade, physics teacher, college counselor)

GPA: ~ 3.45, but trending upward. (2.8 freshman year to a 4.0 this year) There was a bit of family turmoil my freshman year (older brother was kicked out of school, younger brother failed most of his classes, some family turmoil, etc) My school doesn't weight grades.

Senior Year: AP German
AP Music Theory
AP Calculus AB
AP Biology
English 3/4 (our school doesn't offer AP English)
Peer Leading

maybe nobody chances you because you don't say where you're applying....or your rank, or your income bracket or high school caliber

Okay, I'm applying to Brown, Williams, and Vassar... Income bracket is upper middle class, my high school doesn't rank, and my high school is about as tough as it gets (according to a Wall Street Journal survey.)

Brown--80/20 (great chance!)
Williams--80/20
Vassar--in

Hope this helps! You've got great shots everywhere!

I'd say you're in at Williams and Vassar, probably Brown too.

Thank you for your thoughts thus far!

What does "80/20" mean, exactly?

80 times out of 100 they accept you.

I think that is too high of a prediction for any Ivy (Vassar and Williams too), but definetly a very competitive applicant and will probaly get into at least one of the three. Good luck!

I appreciate peoples insights thus far. How much of a difference do you think the upward trend in GPA makes?

I've heard a big difference, especially since you had a "bit of family turmoil" ( I wouldn't call it a bit lol)

You have very little chance at top schools. There are people with no weaknesses, and you have a big weakness (uw gpa). Have fun at your local cc.

Don't listen to AAfoDaURM, he/she is a jerk.

You maxed out the SATs and basically run everything having to do with writing, reading, the english language, etc. Your guidance counselor will probably (and hopefully!) note in her rec that you had family issues. Your upward trend GPA will help you. Good luck!! I'm from RI and Brown is beautiful, even though Providence is slightly a hole.

The part of providence that Brown is in is very nice. South providence is a bit of a different story...

Your sat score is insane.

That score combined with the presence (not quality) of EC's, means that you have a high chance at almost everywhere except ivies/false ivies.

medaughan has clearly had a bad day and must resort to flaming. You're free to leave troll.

AAfoDaURM, why you gotta be sippin' that Haterade?

I wouldn't worry too much. You've got an excellent upward trend going and a 3.5 gpa for now isn't bad.

Freshman year carries significantly less weight than soph or junior year. Some colleges I've heard don't even count 9th grade. Keep that 4.0 up and you're good.

Great job on the SATs btw.

i accept your dare.

like most before me, i think that you're probably in everywhere, except maybe brown, where you still have a very good shot. good luck!

Thanks to all those who have contributed!
