Seems to be different opinions on this topic, including whether the Permit to Report package will provide a definitive list.

So, two basic questions:
1. What will the Plebe be required to bring?
2. What optional items are recommended?

I recall a post from awhile ago stating something to the effect of: "they will issue everything the Plebe needs; send them with only the clothes on their backs..."

Underwear?
Personal hygiene essentials?
Calculator for validation exams (specified in letter from Academic Dean)?
Etc...

I didn't bring any of that stuff that they told you to bring. I brought my running shoes on my feet, was wearing my glasses and had my case of contacts in my backpack, copies of everything, and a toothbrush. I'm pretty sure that's it. They tell you to bring this huge list of crap that you'll just be issued anyway and you'll probably give back to your parents unopened on PPW. I did have my mom send me my own underwear because they give you a bunch of cheap crap, but you really don't want to bring all that stuff because come August you'll have to move it far away.
Oh and you probably won't use a calc. The calc validation exam is before I-day and the chemistry exam was almost all conceptual but no formula sheet so unless you know all of them I wouldn't worry about it.

ITEMS TO BRING:
-copy of permit to report
-copy of vaccinations (keep in your wallet and keep wallet with you)
-running shoes (wear them)
-cell phone and charger (you will have to turn these in, but you will get them back later)
-SMALL toiletries bag with TRAVEL SIZE toothpaste, toothbrush, comb/brush, deoderant, razor and blades, and any other items that are absolutely essential
-females: BCP's if you are on them, and personal hygiene items for first 3 weeks
-calculator

YOU DO NOT NEED:
-anything else. While the "recommended list" includes 6 (Each) of teeshirts, underware, socks, etc, you will be issued them ..... most parents send their mids off with all of these items on the list, carefully folded and packed, only to get them back on PPW NEVER USED! So save yourself the trouble!

NOTE TO PARENTS:
you can send everything else in a care package that can be mailed on I-Day.... the new plebes will get the packages around week 2 or so...... if you are tempted to send anything, send it in a package that will not have to be lugged around by your plebe with all the other stuff that gets issued.

Also- carry with you on I-Day (or tuck into plebes wallet or send in first letter) a small american flag.... 2x4 inches will do nicely.... they will need it for their room to prevent a charge of "mutany" so consider that a "MUST DO!"

NOTE OF CAUTION:
would not recommend sending electric razors or other electrical gagets (cameras, etc) on I-Day.... they will be taken away, and who's to say you will get them back (our Mid's razor is still MIA, along with his flip flops!)....
send only the MOST MINIMAL OF ESSENTIALS and MAIL EVERYTHING ELSE.

also, don't even bother wearing a watch. my mid's watch was taken away on I-Day and placed in a box with the rest of the company's watches. the box was lost.
part of plebe summer is not knowing what time it is. you have to depend on the cadre. only during the last week or maybe two were the clocks in Bancroft uncovered.

Just to clarify....JackTraveler says no calc and navy2010 says yes. Any reasons? Jack, why is the Calc validation exam before I-day? How does everyone take it?

I believe you get your cell back the night before your calls so you can charge it, though you certainly still want to turn it off before handing it in. (and don't even think about using it other than your 5 min call the next day, you will be asked)

White Boxer briefs were high on my son's list of requested things to send after I-day

Pack light and get there early, no point in stressing about getting there on time as you start a stressful day. My son had a later reporting time, around 9 as I recall and the lines were short by then so the officer in charge just told everyone standing outside to get in line regardless of their reporting time. Even with that he ended up completing his processing towards the end of the day and no time to get his room squared away. If you get an early reporting time it's not a bad thing. You're going to be getting up early all summer so what's one day.

RE:
White boxer briefs. Took forever to find WITHOUT any other colors. So no CKs, Polo, TH...

Target. Target brand in men's section. White boxers, stretchy material, come in a package 3 or 5 for 4.99. All white, no markings, no inside tags. Come down a little on the upper thigh to prevent chafing in the heat. Wash up with no shrinkage, stay completely white with bleach.

Yeah it's accessible even without the PTR. It takes a while to load, but when it finally does you enter your last name (just like it was on your appointment letter) and your candidate number (the one we used to log into the candidate information system).

navy2010, thanks for the good info. I'm wondering about all the bras the females are supposed to purchase. Are these necessary or are they like the other things you said will be issued?

GoUSNA2012. Still having problems; maybe they haven't updated just yet, so I'm not in the database yet. I'll give it a shot in a couple more days. Thanks!
