I-Day Reservations

Should I be making hotel reservations for I-Day now? I'm going up to visit the Academy in April and I figured I could check out the area then, but I'm wondering if availability of close/nice hotels will be limited if I wait until I get the Permit to Report.

Hi Soylent,
Everyone I have spoken to has said to reserve a hotel as soon as possible. They fill up really quickly. It is not simply just future midshipmen that book. Parents, grandparents, alumni, etc... I would suggest booking ASAP. The Westin is really nice and so is the Lowes Hotel. I would recommend them both- about a 8-10 minute walk from the Academy.

would agree- make your reservations now- most hotels will allow you to cancel 48-72 hrs ahead of time (check!)

Do we usually have to be there pretty early in the morning on I-Day?

The reporting times are staggered throughout the morning starting around 0630 and ending around 1100. They will tell you when to report when you get your permit to report.

wow, as late as 1100?

That's what I understand. I have read that they make all attempts to keep the reporting Plebes from piling up and bogging down the process. Guess I will find out soon enough.

Are families invited to I-day this year?

I don't see why they wouldn't be. So far the supe has only "uninvited" families to Sea Trials, which is understandable as those are military exercises, not formal affairs like the swearing in ceremony or the oath of office.

You should make reservations now. The hotels within walking distance may in fact be already filled. Most hotels will run shuttles to the Yard on that morning. I would also check out the great B&Bs in town. You cannot get closer than that. Several are run by Navy families. I know for sure that the Georgian House is run by Navy parents and they are very accommodating during that time period. They will make sure that you are well fed that morning before you report!

And while there is method in the madness of assigning times, the Mids-to-be can report when they arrive at Alumni Hall, whatever time it may be. It's sorta like ... "come and get it" ... "cause now we got you!"  ;)

As the numbers reveal, it is more than survivable, and nearly everyone makes it. While there is much made of this transition, and it is monumental, consider that you'd be statistically at greater risk of not coming back for sophomore year, were you to enroll at Maryland, Penn State, etc. And MUCH GREATER risk of not graduating in 4 years or even at all going to one of those fine institutions.

Congrats, good luck, and go get 'em. My Mid said he deemed the single most important preparation is to "be in good physical condition." Otherwise, he said one immediately becomes overly obvious. Below the radar is better.

As far as scheduling for Parent's weekend: I know it is the 8-10 Aug., but does it start early on the 8th? We are flying from the West, so we would need to come in on the 7th if activities start early on the 8th. I'm just asking based on those who have been in the past, since I doubt this year's schedule is out yet. Thanks,

Early on the 8th. Exhibits (sorta like a college fair set up where you can go to booths and get souvenirs, information, fotos of your Mid and others, "meet the press/pres/supe" talks, video of the summer, meet departmental and divisional folks, parades, lots to do. You'll wanna be there early, for sure. It'll be one of the most memorable days of your parental life, and when you see your transformed Mid coming to connect with you ... you will be bustin' unless you're not breathing. Incredible experience.

This is last year's PPW information, but I guess it gives us a general idea of what to expect as far as the schedule goes: http://www.usna.edu/SpecialEvents/PW2011Sked.pdf

Last night I did the priceline thing for I-day ...........bagged the Annapolis Westin for 2 nights @ $59 per...........down side is the no cancellation policy......see you there !

We used hotwire last year and ended up with Historic Inns of Annapolis for I-day and The Sheraton for PPW.
