If I were to transfer to a CC back in California after a year at ASU, would I still be applicable for the TAG program?
@shehzburger: When do you plan to apply to the UC’s with TAG? For Fall 2020, no you would not be eligible. For Fall 2021, yes you would be eligible if you start the CA CC by Fall 2020 after your Freshman year at ASU.
note that at Davis the TAG program also requires you attend a CCC spring semester prior to the year you apply, so a total of 3 semesters. See https://www.ucdavis.edu/admissions/undergraduate/transfer/transfer-admission-guarantee/criteria
I see, so I’d have to spend Junior Year in the CC if I wanted to be eligible. I was planning on applying in Fall 2020.
Is Davis the only UC that requires this?
^^^ So far as I know, but it is always a good idea to check the tag matrix for the year when you apply. Rules can change…
The matrix was supposed to be available the start of August but doesn’t look like it is out yet. See https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/admission-requirements/transfer-requirements/transfer-admission-guarantee-tag.html This page gives links to each campus, also a good idea to read the details on each campus you are considering before you make your TAG choice
@shehzburger: You can still apply this admission cycle for UC transfer but not for TAG, if you will have all pre-req and major course requirements completed by Spring 2020. UCD is the only UC that has the Spring/Fall/Winter CC requirement for TAG as of last year. As stated above, the new TAG Matrix is not yet published so that could change along with TAG GPA requirements. I do know that UCI will not longer accept TAG for their CS major for Fall 2021. I see the trend for TAG major exclusions continuing for the more popular/competitive majors at all of the UC campuses in the future.
Correction above for UCI which does not accept TAG for any majors in the School of Information and Computer sciences for Fall 2020.
If you have not already started at ASU, then cancel your enrollment there for the fall, and start at your local CC.
@shehzburger You can TAG To any of the UCs offering TAG (except Davis, which has that spring 2019 CCC rule) as long as you have 30 semester units from anywhere by end of this summer. UCSB allows only 10 of those 30 semester units to be from AP. The others do not currently have any AP limitation. You then need to fulfill at least 30 units at a CCC by end of spring 2020. As @mikemac noted, Davis is not in the running.
While the TAG rules may change for fall entry 2020, I don’t expect any UC to take the draconian measures that Davis creates in order to add loopholes. Of course, the rules will be out soon.
i think @happymomof1 has a point - heading to a CA CC instead of ASU is probably your most direct route to a UC.
Ok, thank you for your guys’ inputs as well as the information! I’ll assess and look over my options.
Since ASU classes will be starting very soon and you may have already paid for housing/tuition etc… you could attend 1 semester at ASU, then start your CA CC during Spring semester.
What would my chances be if I decided to do 1 year at ASU, got 30 credits and then tried to transfer into a UC or a CSU? Obviously less of a chance than a CCC student, but how low?
You plan to do the 2nd year at a CA CC?
You need 60 units completed to transfer. Junior-level.
You plan to do the 2nd year at a CA CC?
Considering that I moved into the dorms with all my stuff and the inconvenience it would put on my parents, I’d prefer doing the 2nd year at a CA CC. Would that affect my eligibility for the program?

I see, so if I were to even plan on transferring, it’d have to be after my sophomore year or whenever I get those 60 credits.
If you do your 2nd year at a California CC, then you would get CA CC priority vs. doing a 2nd year at ASU where you would get the lowest priority in transferring to a UC. Yes, you are looking at taking 2 years for transfer but you will apply Fall 2020 for Fall 2021 admission. If you plan to stay at ASU until end of Freshman year, I would consider enrolling in a California CC for Summer session to get head start on the major pre-req and GE transfer requirements. I would also double check to make sure all units taken at ASU are UC transferable or you may not make that 60 semester/90 quarter minimum by Spring 2021.
And don’t go by course title and what someone tells you. Check.
